Water worries loom large

The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) councillors on Thursday discussed various water-related issues during the council meet .

Mayor D Venkatesh Murthty said that they will hold a meeting with Chief Minister  Siddaramaiah to discuss various civic issues,  including water and garbage crisis.

Special commissioner K R Niranjan said they had allotted Rs 75 crore for borewells in 2012-13, of which Rs 42 crore was still remaining. The department is ready to release these funds for borewell when required, he said. “Let us not drill unnecessarily where water is not available,” he said, adding that `10 lakh has been sanctioned for drilling borewells in old wards and Rs 30 lakh for new wards.

‘God Save Us’

BWSSB additional engineer-in-chief Babu Kumar said the city needs 600 cusecs of water every day. There is 1.7 tmc of water in KRS with which we can manage for the next 20 days. There is 0.7 tmc of water in Hemavathy. Apart from this, BWSSB has also purchased 30 lorries to supply water. “We are keeping our fingers crossed for rain. If not, god should save us,” he said.
