‘Building housing Jadubabur bazaar needs repair’

KOLKATA: Member mayor-in-council (market), KMC, Mr Tarak Singh and senior officials of the KMC visited Jadubabur bazaar today and said that the building housing the market needed immediate repair.

Representatives of Forum of Traders Organisation also accompanied them.

"The building lacks fire safety-measures and the civic body would soon serve a notice to the building owners declaring it dangerous," said Mr Singh.

The old building is in a dilapidated condition and the electrical wiring needs immediate repair, said Mr Singh, adding the first floor is in a bad shape.

The civic officials asked the shop owners, who do not have fire-safety measures, to install fire extinguishers immediately to avoid any mishap. There are around 700 shop owners, among whom some alleged that the building can collapse any moment.   On 10 June chief minister Mamata Banerjee has convened a meeting of the agri-commodities monitoring committee at the Writers' Buildings. Senior ministers, home secretary, members, mayor-in-council of the civic body would attend the meeting. Senior officials of the market department and representatives of the traders organisation would be present at the meeting where they would request the state government to acquire the market from private owners and revive it.  The decision to visit the market was taken after Miss Banerjee instructed the civic officials to visit the KMC market every week following a mishap in Surya Sen Market that claimed 21 lives.
