Hyderabad: Hours after the City Light hotel building collapse, GHMC commissioner M.T. Krishna Babu on Monday announced that joint teams from the engineering and town planning wings will conduct an inspection of all the commercial establishments in the city which are aged 50 years or more and are made of lime and mortar with load bearing walls (no pillared buildings to be checked in phase-I).

“This special drive will be carried out from Tuesday as per the directions of CM N. Kiran Kumar Reddy, who has also ordered an enquiry into the building collapse incident,” he said.

However, Krishna Babu failed to explain how the GHMC is going to identify the age of the building (50 years) as it does not have records of all buildings which are 50 years old, and those  which are made of lime mortar and standing with the support of load-bearing walls and not pillars.

When asked why  the GHMC failed to identify City Light building as a dilapidated structure, he said, “There are 20 lakh buildings in the city and we cannot check each building from inside.”
