BMC plans campaign against use of earphones on roads

BMC's general body has passed a resolution to initiate a campaign against use of headphones or earphones in public places to check the number of accidents involving pedestrians.

The proposal was put forth by Shiv Sena corporator from D-ward area around Tardeo, Arvind Dudhwadkar, who has even suggested advertisements akin to anti-tobacco commercials to be aired for this purpose.

"The users of headphones or earphones in public places cannot hear any warnings. This is a very serious matter as it can prove to be fatal on roads. We should put up posters, air advertisements on television and in theatres," said Dudhwadkar, who drew up the proposal after witnessing the fatal accident of a 17-year-old girl near Dadar -TT Road in June.

Mayor Sunil Prabhu, who passed the proposal, said, "It is a fair proposal seeking to keep people alert and safe. Before such a campaign can be implemented, we will have discussions with experts from fields such as traffic and then present it to the civic administration."
