NDMC names MPs in list of 1,500 defaulters

The New Delhi Municipal Council has uploaded a list of over 1,500 MPs - past, present, even dead — who, according to its records, have not cleared electricity, water dues over the years.

In the list, the NDMC has named Rajnath Singh, Ajit Singh, Ambika Soni, Sanjay Nirupam, Renuka Chowdhury, Madhu Koda, Raj Babbar, Shabana Azmi, Abhishek Manu Singhvi and Lalu Prasad Yadav. The late Kalpnath Rai, Madhav Rao Scindhia, Sunil Dutt and Rajesh Pilot also figure in the list.

This is the second time that a list naming MPs and other residents who owe money to the NDMC has been put on its website. When it was first uploaded last year, there was such an uproar that it had to be removed.

NDMC chairperson Jalaj Srivastava said the list is the existing record of arrears and has been uploaded on the website so that individuals who may have cleared their dues can inform the civic body with proof of payment.

"If anyone has cleared the dues and if the list has not been updated, he/she can contact us. We will have proper information on the arrears," Srivastava said.

In 2008, the Lok Sabha secretariat had informed the Delhi High Court that dues from MPs were being recovered by deducting amounts from salaries and pensions. An NDMC official said there was still some confusion on how to recover dues from from MPs who have passed away.
