Contractor told to improve cleanliness in school toilets

PUNE: The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation has directed its contractor to improve the cleanliness of toilets in civic schools by October 2. Municipal commissioner Shrikar Pardeshi said school principals have been asked to report about the cleanliness in school toilets.

There are 134 primary schools run by the municipal school board where around 50,000 students study. The secondary education department runs 18 secondary schools where 10,000 students study. Corporators have been complaining about the lack of cleanliness in these toilets.

Earlier, the general body had discussed a proposal to allow Rotary Club of Pimpri Chinchwad to construct public toilets in six places in the city near the urinals at Babasaheb Ambedkar chowk in Pimpri, outside the octroi post in Phugewadi, in the open space inside Bird Valley, Sai chowk, Sangvi and under the Bhosari flyover.

The civic body will provide 500 sq ft space at each place at a nominal monthly rent of Re 1 for 30 years. The club will construct and run the public toilets on a pay and use basis in return for advertisement rights on them. Anant Korhale, group leader of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena ( MNS), sought to know whether the civic body will be giving land to other social organizations for constructing public toilets. Shrirang Barne, group leader of Shiv Sena, demanded that public toilets be constructed in all public places and complained that the toilets in civic schools and public places were dirty.
