Indore to produce electricity from sewerage water

INDORE: In a unique initiative, Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) starts a power plant that produces electricity from sewerage water. The power generation facility was set up at sewerage treatment plant of IMC based at Kabitkhedi.

The facility is pegged to be the first such power generation unit in the country. Mayor Krishnamurari Moghe said facility is joint venture of IMC and Jash Engineering which would generate power from sewerage via Hydro Power Screw Generator. The plant has installed power generation capacity of around 18.5 KW to 22 KW.

The project become operational because of the fact that treated water at Kabitkhedi sewerage treatment plant falls from the height of 5 meter and it produces sufficient force to move a turbine. Thus, it was possible to produce electricity.

Kabitkhedi area holds significance for Riverside Corridor project, as nearly 180 million litres of sewage falls into Khan river everyday and out of which, only half is being treated.

Excited the project, IMC is now planning to have similar power generation units at other STPs. "Soon similar power generation facility would be started at two other STPs of IMC having treatment capacity of 122 MLD each," said mayor.
