Allahabad Development Authority razes illegal houses near riverbanks

ALLAHABAD: On the second day of the ongoing drive against illegal constructions near riverbanks in pursuance high court directives, a team of officials and staff of Allahabad Development Authority (ADA) accompanied by a police force and labourers demolished several illegal constructions at Daragunj area on Wednesday.

The demolition squad pulled down several illegal houses and shops set up in the low-lying areas. The action was opposed by locals who tried to stop the team from undertaking demolitions. However, the resistance was quelled by the police force present with the team.

An ADA official said the action was taken in light of the high court directive and recent floods where lakhs were marooned after river water entered their houses. They also included those who had constructed houses without proper sanction from ADA and municipal authorities in violation of set norms.

He said that similar drives would be undertaken in areas where people have illegally constructed houses on government land on the banks of Ganga and Yamuna ignoring government and court directives.
