Corporation to install plastic shredders in five places
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The health wing of the city corporation will install plastic shredders at five places in the city. Earlier the civic body had approved a decision to install three plastic shredders at Manacaud, Chalai and Palayam with financial assistance from Suchitwa mission. The council meeting held here on Saturday had approved the proposal presented by the health standing committee.
Besides the civic body will install similar units at Kesavadasapuram and Muttada as well. The project will be implemented jointly with Kudumbasree which would then supply shredded plastic to Public works department for road-tarring. Kudumbasree has already reached an agreement with PWD to supply shredded plastic. The cleanwell workers will collect waste from households and supply it to Kudumbasree on a daily basis.
The project to begin paper and cloth bag manufacturing units within the city will also be revamped. Although the civic body had launched a similar campaign in January 2013, the corporation had to backtrack owing to resistance from retailers who cited legal issues in the complete ban of plastic in the city.
The civic body had begun seizing of plastic above 40 microns when the retailers claimed that as per the plastic rules (management and handling)-2011, the ban applies only to the sale of plastic below 40 microns.The civic body will also incorporate agriculture department in it's efforts to promote the use of manure from decentralised waste-management plants set up across households.
