PMC files cases against 25 mosquito breeding sites

As part of the dengue surveillance drive, Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) have filed 25 cases against cooperative housing societies, tyre works firms, and households for mosquito breeding sites. Of the 25 cases, nine have been filed against construction sites.

So far, 518 cases of dengue have been reported this year, with 126 alone in September. As many as 15 cases have been reported every day this month.

While intense surveillance has helped detect more cases of dengue, doctors said this year there have been very few patients who had to be admitted to intensive care unit.

"We are seeing a mild form of dengue this year. We often advise patients to increase fluid intake and provide them with symptomatic treatment," said Dr Rajesh Gadia, Consulting Physician, KEM Hospital.

Dr Sham Satpute, Assistant Medical Officer of PMC, and incharge of the insect control department, said fines have been imposed in three such cases. "A majority of breeding sites were found at cooperative housing societies, tyre works firms, and bungalows," said Satpute.

The civic administration had issued notices and warned of action if people failed to follow guidelines. "We decided to file cases after individuals and organisations failed to prevent mosquito breeding sites," said Satpute.

He said if a case is reported at a particular area, field workers at the insect control department fumigate the area and surrounding places.
