CMC drops Rs 1.6cr health club project

MARGAO: The Cuncolim Municipal Council (CMC) has dropped the much-delayed Rs1.6 crore health club project, in favour of a new commercial project which will be built using the government's Golden Jubilee grant.

This decision comes against the backdrop of investigations into the health club project by the Cuncolim police and later by the anti-corruption bureau. Even though it's been almost two years since the investigations began, sources said that there has been no progress in the case due to lack of evidence.

"The civic body waited for nearly two years for police clearance but in vain. We have decided to utilize the 1.55 crore grant to execute a commercial-cum-rehabilitation project behind the post office, which will widen the existing road," said CMC chairperson Devendra Dessai. CMC sources said that the commercial project would also house government offices, and the council would also ask the government to provide additional grants for the project.
