6 vendors booked for encroachment

SURAT: Athwalines police have registered cases against six vendors, who had encroached upon the road opposite Surat General Hospital. The vendors were booked for encroaching the public road and their belongings were seized by the police on Tuesday.

The cases were registered following complaint lodged by the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC), which has turned a red eye to roadside vendors in Chauta Bazaar for virtually encroaching upon the entire road.

Over 1,500 vendors have been evicted from the city's oldest market and none have returned in the last three days.

DR Gohil, zonal officer of central zone said, "Our teams will continue patrolling in the market on daily basis to ensure that the vendors don't return. Even the tarpaulins in the market have been removed and shop keepers have been advised to display their wares inside the shop."

Gohil added, "The pedestrians and vehicles could easily navigate from the market due to the absence of the vendors"
