Illegal buildings: GHMC set to rein in violators

T. Lalith Singh

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has decided to crack the whip against unauthorised constructions in the city after December 31. The civic body which has planned to complete the process of Building Penalisation Scheme (BPS) by this year-end hopes to have a database on buildings that had come up without necessary approvals and permissions.

Though the shortage of manpower in town planning wing to effectively monitor the building permissions and streamline construction activity in the city as per regulations in vogue, has been a stumbling block, the GHMC has already compiled a list of 1,674 unauthorised constructions. This includes 758 constructions pending action from 2012 while another 916 were identified so far this year. The corporation officials said notices were being issued to all the identified unauthorised constructions and where required, police was being approached for required help and assistance.

“Notices are being issued to all these buildings which came up in violation of regulations. There are some instances of court cases and for some other constructions, our staff are in the process of preparing notices,” said GHMC Additional Commissioner (Planning) D. Ronald Rose.
