AMC to appoint contractor for Naregaon

AURANGABAD: Amid strong opposition against dumping garbage in Naregaon yard, the standing committee on Wednesday passed a resolution to appoint a private contractor for chemically treating the dumped garbage at the site. The contractor will be appointed for a period of one year.

The Aurangabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) will pay Rs 2,023 per litre for the chemical. The quantity of the chemical to be spread on the garbage will be decided later.

Naregoan residents have been agitating from time to time about the foul smell emanating from the yard. They have complained about the over-utilisation of the site and are demanding shifting of the yard at the earliest. The AMC is mulling over finding an alternative.

On several occasions, the residents have threatened to block entry of trucks carrying garbage to the site. Recently, Naregaon corporator Manish Dahihande, also the chairman of the health committee in the AMC, said that the villagers were gearing up for a "strong and decisive agitation" on the issue.
