125 MCD employees get termination notice

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has issued termination notices to 125 employees working in its Health department on grounds of seeking employment through forged documents. In addition, the MCD’s upper division clerk U C Sharma, who reportedly facilitated the appointments, has also been suspended.

The matter came to light with the intervention of Delhi Mayor Dr Kanwar Sain who looked into the issue and recommended the action.

According to the civic body, 225 employees had been appointed in the department in 2000 facilitated by Sharma. In 2006, an audit department investigation revealed that these appointments were illegal as they had been done on the basis of forged documents and with the approval of the then Municipal Commissioner they were handed out termination notices.

However, of the 225 employees, 125 employees then approached the Delhi High Court following which the civic body was asked to reinstate these employees on the ground that they had been denied a chance of a fair hearing.

As per the court directions, the MCD re-instated the employees and served them a show cause notice to produce the original documents, failing which the civic body has finally issued them a notice for termination of their service.
