BBMP razes illegal sheds, 60 families evicted

More than 60 families of MRCR Layout in Govindarajanagar were in for a rude shock on Wednesday when their sheds were brought down within no time by the Bruhat Bangalore Mahangara Palike (BBMP) as part of a demolition drive.

Annamma, who has been living there for four years, was busy arranging the household items that she had spread out in front of her demolished home.

"The house owners had earlier assured us that we won’t be thrown out of house. For each house, Rs 2,000 was fixed as rent and Rs 10,000 as advance. And, we had been paying rent regularly. This is injustice and where are we supposed to go now," questioned Annamma even as her grandson Manju was playing.

Over 60 Muslim and Hindu families, mainly labourers and vegetable vendors, resided in these 60-odd sheds. "The demolition was carried out following a direction from the City Civil Court. The sheds had come up on a civic amenity (CA) site. It has been encroached upon and sheds were built illegally. We have taken this step only after issuing many notices to the residents. Further, a high-tension power line runs over the CA site," said one of the BBMP engineers who was present during the time of demolition.

"We got a notice three months ago. But, when we showed it to the house owners, they said that nothing would happen. We got to know only on Tuesday night that Palike will demolish the houses the next morning. When we questioned the house owners, they washed  their hands of the issue saying they too were helpless. Hence, my neighbours and I had shifted the household items, fearing eviction," said Meena, another resident.
Some residents have started hunting for new homes in the locality. Many of them complained that the house owners are not refunding the advance money.

The BBMP sources said that they will fence the CA site soon and take necessary steps as per the orders of Palike Commissioner M Lakashminarayana.

Illegal sheds on civic amenity site razed

Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) authorities demolished more than 40 temporary sheds which were allegedly put up on a civic amenity (CA) site at Govindarajanagar on Tuesday.

The CA site located at National Housing Co-operative Society Layout in Govindarajanagar ward is spread over around one-and-a-half acre.   Speaking to Express, Councillor Mohan Kumar alleged that one Rajanna had put up more than 40 temporary sheds and rented them to many people.

There was a garage and other shops. He was earning a rent of `1.5 lakh from these shops every month. “We had approached the civil court which ordered to evict those shops, three months ago. Inspite of the court’s direction, our officials did not take any interest to evict them,” he alleged.

He further said that he had brought it to BBMP Commissioner’s notice in the Council meeting on July 31. The Commissioner had not only suspended the concerned BBMP Executive Engineer, but insisted on the eviction of illegal sheds within a week. But it was not done. “On Tuesday, Assistant Executive Engineers of all the nine wards in Govindarajanagar constituency, along with two police platoons, demolished those sheds,” he said.

AMC seals 50 commercial properties, recovers Rs 30L in a day

AURANGABAD: Acting tough against the commercial property owners, the Aurangabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) on Tuesday sealed 50 properties in the city on account of delay in tax payments. Under the new system, the civic body has made it mandatory for all commercial property owners to fulfil their current tax liability in the first quarter of the financial year.

Till last financial year, the tax payers used to turn up at the end of the fiscal.

Tax collection in charge in the AMC, Shivaji Zanzan, on Tuesday said it was for the first time in the current fiscal that the AMC had sealed such a huge number of properties.

Municipal commissioner Harshdeep Kamble had some time back said that the AMC would implement effective tax collection drives for achieving higher percentage of tax from residential property owners.

"Such aggressive action against the tax payers was only witnessed during the financial year ending. But as the municipal body has decided to carry out tax collection drive aggressively right from the first quarter, we are sealing properties simultaneously in all the six municipal wards," he said. Zanzan said that all the six ward officers were directed to take tough action against those delaying payments.

Zanzan said that all the 20,000 commercial property owners were served notices in March asking them to pay the taxes to avoid sealing. "In the current financial year, the civic body has recovered Rs 20 crore on account of commercial property tax while the total outstanding due is Rs 48 crore," he said.

He said the AMC officials recovered about Rs 30 lakh on Tuesday during the tax collection drive. Calling it a big success, Zanzan said many property owners were paying tax on the spot to avoid sealing action. The total target of property tax in 2013-14 is Rs 100 crore (including commercial and residential properties).

There are a total of 1.75 lakh property owners in the city limits. But the residential property owners are not on the radar of the civic administration. A senior officer in the tax collection department in the municipal corporation on the condition of anonymity, said that demand notices to the residential tax payers were not yet issued. "As of now we are focusing on commercial properties," he said.
