PCMC to appoint curator at mini zoo in Akurdi
PUNE: The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation has decided to appoint a curator at the Nisargakavi Bahinabai Choudhary zoo in Akurdi.
The decision has been taken after the Central Zoo Authority of India (CZAI) directed the municipal corporation to create technical posts for the zoo. The standing committee of the municipal corporation recently took the decision to create the post of the curator. It has decided to appoint retired scientist of the Zoological Survey of India, Dr R H Kamble for the post.
Last month, the Central Zoo Authority of India had directed the municipal corporation to shift two leopards from the zoo to the animal orphanage at Katraj. According to a plan approved by the Central Zoo Authority of India, the zoo in Pimpri Chinchwad is supposed to have only birds and reptiles. So, other animals need to be shifted to facilities where there will be adequate arrangements.
The zoo authorities in Akurdi had already shifted monkeys at the zoo. The zoo at present has several species of birds and reptiles. The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation incidentally is still working on a plan to provide bus connectivity to important places of tourist interest in the city. Besides the mini zoo, there are several attractions such as Durga Devi hills, Appu Ghar, water sports centre, Bird valley, Science Park, and Boat Club, besides several other gardens in the city.
