Private bus operator gets HDMC notice

Staff Correspondent

The protest march organised by the KSRTC Staff and Workers Federation against unauthorised private bus operators seems to have made some impact.

While the Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation (HDMC) has issued notices to a private bus operator for running bus stations without permission and a land owner for allowing their lands to be used for the purpose, officials of the Regional Transport Office have seized 24 vehicles and imposed penalty on them.

The HDMC on Wednesday evening served notices on Rani Chennamma Bus Services, which operates buses to various destinations. The manager of Sujata Talkies has also been slapped with a notice for allowing their land to be used as a bus-station for private bus operators. They have been told that if they failed to approach the authorities seeking permission, action would be taken against them as per the provisions of the Karnataka Municipal Corporations Act. Managing director of North West Karnataka Road Transport Corporation too had sought action against private operators. According to the KSRTC Staff and Workers Federation and NWKRTC officials, the NWKRTC is incurring losses to the tune of Rs. 40 lakhs to Rs. 50 lakhs a day because of private bus operators.

Court restrains State from holding mayoral polls for now

Special Correspondent

The High Court on Thursday restrained the State government from issuing calendar of events till next week for the mayoral elections in the city.

Justice H.N. Nagamohan Das passed the interim order on a petition filed by Congress councillors Lokesh V. Nayaka and Indira, both belonging to the Scheduled Tribe (ST) community.

The petitioners challenged the February 8, 2013 notification by the State government reserving the Mayor’s post to general category and the Deputy Mayor’s to Backward Class A category. The petitioners complained these posts had never ever been reserved for ST even though it is the 14th term of the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), terming it as a Constitutional violation.

The two councillors had filed this petition afresh as the High Court had last week said that it could not pass order on present reservation, as their previous petition pertaining to the previous term had expired. The court also had withdrawn its earlier interim order directing government not to hold elections if either of the posts is not reserved for ST.
