PUNE: Pimpri Chinchwad municipal commissioner Shrikar Pardeshi inspected nullah cleaning work in the municipal limits for three consecutive days. Pardeshi conducted the inspection in Zone C(Bhosari, Moshi, Dighi, Charholi, Dapodi, Dudulgaon and other areas) limits on Saturday.

Deputy mayor Raju Misal alongwith the officials of the health and engineering departments accompanied him. He inspected the nullah near the Durvankur lawns along Alandi road; nullah from Radhanagari society to CME compound wall in Sandvik colony ward; nullahs near Adarshnagar and fire station in Bhosari. He also inspected the nullah in Phulenagar flowing from Auto lab to Telco road; nullah flowing from Sana weighing station to Polygrass hockey stadium and nullah flowing from Bhosari fire station to Pune-Nashik highway.

Earlier Pardeshi had directed the civic administration to complete the nullah cleaning works in the municipal limits till May 30, to avoid flooding in monsoon. After the set deadline, he inspected nullah cleaning works in Zone A(Nigdi, Akurdi, Chinchwad, Talawade, Chikhli and other areas) and Zone B(Pimpri, Chinchwadgaon, Ravet, Kiwale and other areas) on Friday.

Out of 34 nullahs, 26 were cleaned by civic employees and eight nullahs through private contractors in Zone B. Pardeshi directed the officials to complete the remaining cleaning work of nullahs in Kharalwadi and Lal Topinagar slum in Pimpri quickly and remove the garbage.

NMC anti-feticide drive kicks off

NAGPUR: Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) teams kicked off their month long 'crash inspection drive' to check female feticide on Saturday and conducted inspections at 60 sonographycentres and 22 abortions centres in different parts of the city on first day itself. Twenty teams have been deployed for the drive. The details of which team went where and who constituted the teams have been kept confidential as per instructions of the civil surgeon.

The drive apparently went off smoothly with no untoward incident or dispute between the inspecting team and the centres. There were no faults found in records at these centres. Strangely, sources said notices would be issued to two obstetric and gynaecologists Dr Seema Khurana and Dr Urmila Naidu who were not present at the centre. No rule says the doctors can't go out of station and have to be present all the time at the centre.

District Civil Surgeon Dr Umesh Navade said that even if these two doctors were not informed, the centres cannot be running in their absence as it was illegal to run abortion centre in doctors' absence. "Though the information about conducting the crash drive came later, we had already informed organizations like the Nagpur Obstetrics and Gynaecology Society (NOGS), the Indian Radiology and Imaging Association (IRIA) and Indian Medical Association (IMA) to inform their members that the inspections could be carried out in June. Every doctor the three fields was expected to inform NMC if they were to be out of station or their centres would be closed anytime during June. On the first day itself, two doctors were not present. NMC will issue them notice," said Dr Bhavana Sonkusle, the nodal officer for the drive.

Dr Alka Mukherjee, NOGS secretary, accepted that NMC nodal officer had informed the NOGS. In turn, the organization had sent text messages to each member. "These two doctors are not our members. How can we inform them? NMC will have to devise some ways to inform the non-members too. May be some junior doctor or colleague could be running the centre. I feel every practitioner who owns the centre should avoid carrying out any MTP or sonography when they are not present to avoid mistakes in record as the data are sent online daily," she said.

IMA President Dr Warsha Dhawale told TOI that to avoid such situations every doctor should be either a member of his speciality organization or a member of IMA.

Jaipur civic body to invite tenders for streetlights

JAIPUR: After facing the wrath of city mayor JyotiKhandelwal, the Jaipur Municipal Corporation (JMC) administration is likely to invite long-pending tenders for repairing and maintaining the streetlights this week.

Showing her disappointment with the administration, the mayor on Friday issued a note-sheet alleging mal-intentions of the officials for not inviting tenders, after which the administration came into action. A senior official at JMC said, "The notice inviting tender (NIT) has been prepared. It is expected to be issued on Monday."

As the maintenance and operation contract for the streetlights expired on May 31, around 1.5 lakh street lights in JMC's 77 wards were unattended.

Official sources in the department claimed, "The tender process needs to be started at least six months in advance, but concerned officials and contractors have delayed the process."

Sources added that the JMC has extended the maintenance and repair contract for one month. Earlier, the corporation had planned to extend the contract for another three months. The contractors, however, have demanded an extension of at least six months.

"During monsoon, cases of faults developing in the lighting system are maximum. If JMC wants to ensure that the contractors don't lose out on a minimum profit, the contract must be extended for a minimum period of six months," a contractor said.

Senior officials said, "Officials who have intentionally delayed the process will have to face the music. They have to substantiate their arguments on why the delay was caused or they may have to faces charges of corruption of earning commission from the contractor."

Inviting tenders for the streetlights on the city roads has been mired in controversy in the past too. Last year, mayor Jyoti Khandelwal had alleged that JMC CEO Loknath Soni and the light committee were planning to issue tender on a higher rate due to "personal interests". The state government though had approved the tender rates.
