Allahabad Municipal Corporation team in garbage-laden Kydganj

ALLAHABAD: A team of officials of the Allahabad Municipal Corporation ( AMC) accompanied by a group of corporators on Tuesday visited the Chaukhandi ward in Kydganj locality to take stock of sanitary conditions and other arrangements which have come to a standstill in the wake of absence of safai karmacharis from the area.

Local corporator Ramesh Mishra informed that the team visited different areas under the ward where they found heaps of garbage piled up at various places lying unattended. Besides, drains are also choked as there has been no cleaning work for the last few days and residents of the area are forced to live under insanitary and unhygienic conditions.

Mishra said six safai karmcaharis deputed for duty in the area have been withdrawn by civic authorities without making alternative arrangements leaving residents to languish in filth accumulated in the area. He added that the matter had been brought to the notice of civic authorities but nothing was done.

Corporation to crack down on wayside vendors

The City Corporation is set to act tough against all unauthorised wayside vendors and bunks functioning in the city. The decision to evacuate them all was taken during a council meeting held here on Monday.

The move will also affect the people who earn a living by writing petitions for applicants outside the Corporation office. The decision was arrived at during a discussion on a resolution considering the appeal submitted by a senior manager of Milma regarding availing licence for the Milma bunks functioning along Statue-General Hospital Road, at Devaswom Board Junction, and near the post office in South Fort. As per the order of the Kerala High Court, no business shall be allowed on footpaths or roadsides.

Regarding the illegal constructions in the city, the Corporation will form an assessment team of officers to check the issue. It has been observed that the number of such buildings has been on the rise in the Vizhinjam zone.

The council also approved to take further steps to start the construction of a leachate treatment plant at the now closed Vilappilsala centralised garbage treatment plant. It also expressed hope over the support of the State Government and a court order to start construction in the near future. So far, a fund of Rs 11.52 crore from JNNURM (Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission) has been spent for the plant. The resolution was placed in the council anticipating that the Union Government would ask to return the money allocated unless the work commences. As much as 98 per cent of the equipment for the leachate treatment plant has already been transported to the site at Vilappilsala.

Short term strategies for water crisis

Water situation expected to worsen in a week; three pronged approach adopted

District administration has come up with a three pronged approach as ‘temporary measures’ to solve the water crisis of the city.

Using water released from Hemavathi reservoir, restoring the pumping capacities of pumping stations that supply water to the city and, flushing and re-drilling of defunct borewells under the Calamity Relief Fund (CRF).

Yet, anticipating a severe water crisis within the span of a week, Deputy Commissioner C Shikha has called to maintain discrepancy in using the water.

Water level at KRS has increased by six inches, following the release of 1,598 cusecs of water Hemavathi reservoir.

Water flow into the Devaraya canal had stopped completely after the water level at KRS had dipped below 64 feet. Debris removal and de-silting of the canal has resumed water flow. Belagola pump house will now be able to pump 45 MLD of water, she said.

Similarly, works are also being taken up at Hongalli second and third pumping stations. Emergency pumps are being installed and the pumping stations will be able to draw 15 MLD’s of water in a span of two days.

Works have also been taken up under the CRF for flushing and re-drilling 73 borewells within city limits. Works on 42 borewells have been completed, she said.

Instructions had been sent to JUSCO to employ additional water tankers to provide water to water sparse areas, following which the number of tankers have been increased from 15 to 32.

She was briefing the press after a memorandum on the condition of drinking water supply to Mysore was submitted by the convenor of Association of Concerned and Informed Citizens of Mysore, M Lakshmana and representatives of Institution of Engineers, India.
