Meet on pre-monsoon cleaning

In a meeting of various departments convened by the City Corporation here on Tuesday to discuss the pre-monsoon cleaning drive, the civic body has sought a combined effort of all departments to smoothly carry out the process.

In the meeting, representatives of the Corporation, Police, Fire and Rescue Services, Sewerage Department and National Highway participated. The drive has already started in more than half wards in the city under the aegis of the ward-level health and sanitation committees and in the other wards it will begin soon.

“With the association of all departments the drive can successfully be rolled out; regarding the management of sewerage waste, the support of the Public Works Department has to be there,” said Mayor K Chandrika. The support of Fire and Rescue Services is sought to meet the unexpected calamities of any kind, such as flooding and uprooting of trees.

To discuss the pre-monsoon cleaning activities held till then, a review meeting will be convened next week. A meeting of the councillors was held during the last week of April to carry out the pre-monsoon cleaning drive in which ideas like making compost out of the organic waste and treating garbage on the spot either through burial and burning came up.

‘Concrete measures will be taken to stop use of polythene bags in Pauri’

The newly elected Pauri Municipal Council president Yashpal Benam has said that concrete measures will be taken to stop the use of polythene bags in the city and to ensure the desired level of civic sanitation through effective garbage disposal.

After assuming office, Benam said that the campaign to implement ban on polythene bags will start from July 7 and fines will be imposed on businessman found using the banned items. “The first priority is to facilitate proper garbage. The Paryavaran Sadhan Samiti has agreed to provide 200 nali land free of cost to the municipal board for the disposal of garbage in Jakhati,” Benam told The Pioneer.

He elaborated that the land of Late Mukund Ram Chandola to be donated by PSS to the municipal board will be fenced and after this the municipal council will start disposing garbage here. A garbage treatment plant will be constructed and maintained on this land.

The manure obtained from the treatment plant will be given to the Chandola family for sale. He expressed hope that garbage dumped in the different parts of the town will be removed in a period of two days.

Benam said that the business fraternity in Pauri has been given two months time to stop the use of the banned polythene items and after July 6, the local body will strictly enforce the ban.

Businessmen found using or selling the banned polythene items will be fined Rs 2,000 on the spot in the initial phase. Stringent action will be taken against those found violating the ban, he stressed. Benam said that the estimate of cost for the hot mix of the road from Dhara Road to Agency, Kandoliya to Kinkuleshwar and Civil Line to Tehsil is being sent to the State government. These roads belong to the municipal council and their deteriorated condition is causing major inconvenience to the public.

In the first term of Benam as the president of the Pauri municipal council, the use of the polythene was totally stopped in town. However, later due to the lethargic attitude of the council the ban was not implemented causing the use of polythene bags to become rampant in the market.

People complain about non-supply of water due to fixing of motors to taps

Municipal Corporation of Karimnagar (MCK) Commissioner M. Vanaja Devi has warned the residents of penal action if they resort to fixing of electric motor pumps directly to drinking water taps and overdraw water during summer and deny water to other consumers in various parts of the town.

Talking to newsmen here on Tuesday, she said that they had been receiving several complaints from the residents about the non-supply of water through taps due to fixing of motors by some residents in colonies such as Mankammthota, Jyothinagar, Ramnagar, etc. She said that they would constitute special teams and conduct surprise inspections and seize the motor pumps and impose heavy fines on violators.

Water levels

Allaying fears about shortage of drinking water due to depletion of water table at the Lower Manair Dam reservoir, the main source of water to Karimnagar and other towns, the Municipal Commissioner said that the water table at LMD was at present at 3.82 tmcft and the dead storage level was only 2.5 tmcft. She said that they were lifting 27 million litres per day (MLD) through booster motors from the dam to meet the drinking water requirement in the town. She said that there was no need to panic about the water shortage in the town this summer.

With regard to the allegations on extension of services of some contract sanitation municipal staff and calling tenders for others, she clarified that they had extended the services of only women self-help group members working as sanitation workers. Terming the allegations as false and baseless, she said that they had called for tenders for other sanitation contract workers.
