HMDA to rope in IT firms for protection of nalas

HYDERABAD: The Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) has decided to rope in IT firms and non governmental organisations (NGOs) to prevent dumping of garbage and other pollutants in the four majors nalas and other smaller nalas that are connected to Hussainsagar.

HMDA metropolitan commissioner Neerabh Kumar Prasad said the IT companies or other firms can take up the awareness programme as part of their corporate social responsibility among the people of surrounding colonies of Hussainsagar (up to 1-2 kms along the nalas) and spread the message that garbage and debris should not be dumped in the nalas. Officials said the Hussainsagar Catchment Area Project has been taken up by the HMDA and is going on at a brisk pace. The idea behind this proposal was to prevent waste and other pollutants from entering the lake.

The NGOs or firms can also fence the nalas to prevent waste and debris dumping.

Apart from this, the HMDA is also planning to sensitize industrialists about the need to protect nalas in the vicinity of Kukatpally and Jeedimetla as most of the untreated waste from them flows into Hussainsagar.

"Soon the HMDA will convene a meeting with the zonal commissioners of AP Industrial Infrastructure Corporation, AP Pollution Control Board, Commissioner of Industries, BITS and other NGOs. If the water flowing in the nalas connected to Hussainsagar is clean, the lake will also be clean," Neerabh Kumar Prasad said.

Kanpur Municipal Corporation may revise rent of shops

KANPUR: The municipal corporation may revise the rent of its shops at various places in the city.

The municipal commissioner ordered to fix the rent after a survey of shops. KMC had recently enhanced the rent upto 111%. The shopkeepers had opposed the move. The civic body owns around 4,000 shops in the city which are allotted on monthly rent.

Led by corporator Satyendra Mishra, the shopkeepers met municipal commissioner N K Singh Chauhan and demanded to reduce the rent. The shopkeepers claimed that rent of shops had been enhanced between 3% and 111% which was unfair.

The state government had also issued a GO in 1997 and stated that 12.5% rent could be enhanced after five years. A proposal to enhance rent was floated a couple of months ago. On April 27, KMC passed the proposal.

The shopkeepers saind that under the new provisions, rent of shops situated at Ghantaghar had been enhanced by 83 folds.

Chauhan ordered to make a survey of shops again. He said that enhanced rent would be effective after the report. If there is any error, it would be rectified, he added.

PCMC issues show-cause notice to contractor to recover Rs 3.19cr

PUNE: The Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation has issued a show-cause notice to a contractor, who is operating a plant converting plastic waste into fuel, for recovery of Rs 3.19 crore.

Sarang Kamthekar of Vidyarthi Sena on Tuesday said the notice was issued early last month, a few days before Shiv Sena corporator Seema Savale pointed out irregularities in the runninig of the project. Savale had demanded scrapping of the plant, which was set up six years ago at the Moshi garbage depot. Kamthekar said he along with Savale had been pursuing the progress of the project with PCMC's environment department since January 2013.

"We had sent letters to the department pointing out how the civic body has suffered a loss of Rs 3.31 crore in the last five years as the contractor had failed to enhance the plant's capacity to 25 tonnes per day. The department on Tuesday gave us a copy of the show-cause notice issued to the contractor on April 15. The notice states that the contractor had not submitted any action plan to enhance the capacity of the plant," he said.

Savale had earlier said the contractor was supposed to install a plant to process 25 tonnes of plastic waste every day. The corporation has given Rs two crore to the contractor and allotted five acres of land on lease for a period of 30 years at a nominal rent of Rs 1,000 per annum. However, the plant processes just 1.5 tonnes of waste per day.

The environment department had also sent a letter to the contractor in February, specifying that he needed to make efforts to obtain grants for the project from the Union government as per the conditions laid down in the agreement.

Sanjay Kulkarni, executive engineer, environment cell, said: "The contractor was directed to reply to the notice within seven days, but he has not replied so far. The contractor has also been directed to increase the plant's capacity to 25 tonnes per day, but to no avail. Action will be taken against the contractor for not following the orders."

The civic body , in January 2007, had taken a decision to implement the project for disposal of plastic waste in January 2007. The contractor was supposed to install a processing plant of 25 tonnes capacity. The contractor was also given Rs 2 crore and allotted five acres of land on lease for 30 years at a nominal annual rent of Rs 1,000.
