MC may now send water bills through courier

In order to ensure that water bills reach the city residents, the Municipal Corporation is contemplating a proposal for delivering of these bills through courier. Also, the proposal is that if residents forget to pay their bill, a telephone operator will remind them about the same.

A discussion on the proposals was held between the Mayor and the officials of the civic body. At present, bills are delivered through regular post. It was opined that there are complaints from residents about these not being received on time. The residents then refused to pay surcharge if payment was delayed, claiming that it is not their fault.

Another problem that was encountered was that at times, the bills were delivered when there was no one residing at the particular location. So, while bills keep accumulating, no one turned up to pay these.

Mayor Subhash Chawla said, "I have asked the officials to look into these proposals. This will improve the services of MC. Residents will not be able to take the alibi of delay in delivery of the bills."

The officials have been asked to look at a software through which residents who do not pay the bills on time can be given reminders on lines similar to those given by telecom companies.

Mayor asks for review of decision to set up sewage treatment plant

A few days after approving the proposal for setting up a Sewerage Treatment Plant (STP) at Maloya, Mayor Subhash Chawla has asked for a review of the decision. With there being several technologies available for setting up STP, these will also be looked into before a final decision is taken.

During the meeting of the General House held on April 30, an STP was approved amidst objections from the opposition. A meeting of officials of the Municipal Corporation was held by the Mayor wherein it was decided that available technologies will be explored. If required, the issue will once again be taken up in the General House.

Almost a year ago, the agenda for setting up an STP was presented before the House. Councillors raised objections to the passing of the agenda following which a committee headed by Congress councillor Mukesh Bassi was constituted.

The committee saw one plant at Delhi and another one was to be seen at Ludhiana, but the tour never materialised. Last month, Bassi resigned from the committee following which it was dissolved.

When the agenda came up for discussion again in the House, the Congress councillors along with the nominated ones, gave approval to the agenda.

BJP councillors raised objections that the technology being approved was not the most suited and there were others available. While the agenda was approved at that time, a decision has now been taken to explore other options.

BJP councillor Arun Sood who had expressed his opposition to the passing of the proposal said that the review is an eye wash. "The agenda was approved to suit a particular company. The people who raised the issue are being kept out of the developments," he said.

115 banned water pouches seized in Brahmapur

During a raid conducted by the Brahmapur Municipal Corporation (BMC) team led by Health Officer Dr Subhakanta Dash on last Sunday, 115 illegal water pouches of two brands were seized from various betel shops in the Old Bus Stand area.

A fine of Rs 1,000 was collected from the water pouch manufacturers.

Sources said the Brahmapur Municipal Corporation (BMC) had already banned the manufacture and sale of water pouch under its jurisdiction and in the last council meeting, the members of the civic body had expressed their concern for non-implementation of the ban order in the city.

Health officer Das and Dharmananda Nayak participated in the raid. More raids will be conducted to nab the law breakers, said Subhakanta Das.
