BMC notice to top politicians on illegal alterations

Acting on complaints received from social activists, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has issued notices to six politicians, including three Cabinet ministers, for allegedly carrying out unauthorised alterations and additions to structures owned by them in two housing societies at Worli here.

The notices have been issued to top politicians who live in Shubhada and Sukhada societies in Worli, including Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, senior BJP leader Gopinath Munde, Ministers in the State Cabinet Patangrao Kadam, Anil Deshmukh, Punjab Governor Shivraj Patil and MPCC President Manikrao Thakre.

“The notices have been issued under 53(1) Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning Act (MRTP) Act. IPS officer-turned-lawyer Y.P. Singh had raised the issue of illegal structure alterations and user conversion in the politicians’ Worli housing societies,” a top civic official on condition of anonymity told PTI.

He also said even the societies were asked to remove the illegal additions. However, when they failed to take any action, BMC issued these notices recently.

The BMC has given them a month’s time to remove the illegal constructions, Commissioner Sitaram Kunte said.

Mayor to inspect cowsheds in UP’s Barsana, Varanasi

The Mayor, along with some councillors and officials of the Municipal Corporation, visited cow sheds in Barsana and Varanasi to inspect their conditions in order to shift the stray animals there. From Saturday onwards, the shifting of stray animals to cow sheds in Delhi and Garhshankar will start. However, other places are also being inspected to accommodate more animals.

Initially, 550 stray animals will be shifted out of the city. Of these, 500 will be sent to the cow shed in Delhi and 50 to Garhshankar. The MC will be paying Rs 2,000 per animal to the cow sheds. Thereafter, depending on the number of stray cattle that are caught by the cattle-catching team of the MC, further decisions will be taken about the number of animals that are required to be shifted out.

After the death of a Sector 45 resident when his vehicle hit a stray animal, the MC sprang into action. Mayor Subhash Chawla is visiting the cow sheds along with deputy mayor Satish Kainth, councillor Sat Prakash Aggarwal and the Medical Officer of Health.

Chawla says that the cow shed at Barsana is spread over 50 acres and another 50 acres have been taken for the purpose of keeping stray animals. "Those managing the cow shed have assured us that we can send any number of stray animals. The conditions at the cow shed were satisfactory," he said.

The issue of shifting stray animals had become a bone of contention between the Congress and BJP. While the Congress had mooted the proposal, the BJP councillors had opposed it, stating that the conditions of the cow sheds need to be looked into.

The city has a cattle pound and two cattle sheds. Both the cattle sheds are filled to capacity due to which a need was felt to shift the cattle out of the city. This practice was followed till 2007 after which it was stopped.

Civic body issues warning to schools over parking violations

After Ludhiana Municipal Corporation had to bear the brunt of students' anger on Monday for picking up wrongly parked vehicles from the gate of BCM Arya Model Senior Secondary School in Shastri Nagar, the Tehbazari wing Wednesday issued warnings to all schools on parking rules.

The Municipal Corporation towed away 15 vehicles from the front gate of Guru Nanak Public School, Sarabha Nagar, on Wednesday.

The wing made it clear that, "...from Thursday no pleas and excuses of schools, be it students or teachers will be heard and vehicles will be towed off immediately if found parked wrongly".

Superintendent of the tehbazari wing, Naveen Malhotra, told Newsline: "Today we have told most of the schools to get their parking managed, failing which vehicles will be towed off. If some school is left I would like to inform them through media that vehicles parked wrongly will not be spared. The Mayor is personally taking interest in the matter."

"Be it students or teachers or principal, they are equal for us and whosoever's vehicles is found violating rules and encroaching roads will be towed off Thursday onwards," added Malhotra.

The schools that came under MC radar were Sacred Heart Convent School, Sarabha Nagar; Kundan Vidya Mandir, Civil Lines; Bhartiya Vidya Mandir, Kitchlu Nagar; Greenland Public School, Jalandhar Bypass; Saraswati Model School and others.
