PMC holds talks with Cantonment officials over revenue sharing

The PMC administration had discussions with the officials of Pune Cantonment Board and Khadki Cantonment Board over revenue sharing of LBT. "The PMC was sharing revenue of octroi with the cantonment boards in the ratio of population.

However, implementation of LBT in the cantonment area is becoming a problem due to differences in the rule governing the local bodies," said municipal commissioner Mahesh Pathak.

The cantonment board has no system or dedicated staff to implement LBT, he said, adding the revenue for cantonment board would be from PMC.

"The PMC has given option to cantonment board to either keep revenue sharing in the ratio of population in the respective areas of local civic bodies or by considering the actual business in the cantonment area," he said, adding this is being done to ensure that the traders don't have to pay LBT twice by paying PMC as the goods would pass through its jurisdiction and cantonment board where the goods would be sold.

Councillors call to solve potable water crisis

Irrespective of political differences, the Councillors from West Kochi, demanded urgent measures for solving the potable water crisis that has gripped the area, at the Kochi Corporation Council meeting held at the Council hall on Friday.

Acute water shortage was the major topic that was discussed at the Council meeting and the councillors reiterated the need to provide additional water in tanker lorries to the areas that are facing severe water crisis.

Councillors including  Karmily Antony and K R Prem Kumar requested the Mayor to take necessary steps for the supply of water in additional tanker lorries.

Meanwhile, the opposition councillors raised allegations that the Mayor is taking decisions unilaterally without consulting the Councillors. The opposition’s allegations came in the wake of the issuance of No Objection Certificate (NOC) to a bar at Vyttila.

Meanwhile in his reply, Mayor Tony Chammany said that a special council meeting will be convened soon to decide on the cancellation of the NOC.

Clarifying that the NOC was issued as per the norms suggested by the Excise Commissionerate, Chammany said that the decision to include the NOC issuance in the agenda was taken after discussing it with the Division Councillor and the opposition leader.

“Accordingly, the NOC issuance was listed in the Council meeting on March 12th.

“But the meeting was disrupted by the opposition and we were not able to have a detailed discussion on the topic,” he said.

With illegal construction turning out to be a major concern in the city, Pune Municipal Corporation has urged citizens to buy property only after proper verification of the structure's legality.

Such information has been made available for the citizens on its official website www.pmcalert.org.

"The citizens should keep away from illegal constructions. A list of all PMC-approved building plans has been put up on our website and for structures apart from those, citizens should check with the civic offices concerned to avoid loss of property or life in case of any eventuality," said Additional City Engineer Vivek Kharwadkar.

In a press statement, the civic administration further stated that if any citizen wants to file a complaint or provide information about illegal constructions, then they can do so on the website.

The civic administration has urged citizens to provide information on any construction that is being done in haste, it said, adding, "The PMC will not provide any civic services to illegal buildings in the city." It also stated that citizens should get information on completion certificate of any construction before using it for residential purpose.

Meanwhile, PMC has intensified its drive against illegal constructions and demolished several structures in Baner and Sangamwadi. "The civic administration has taken up work to identify illegal constructions that are dangerous and need to be demolished. It has also started the process of filing criminal cases against the developer of illegal constructions," Kharwadkar said.

In Taljai, where an illegal building collapsed in September, leading to the death of 11 persons, he said the civic administration has identified 27 illegal constructions that are in a precarious condition. "The PMC has served notice to the residents of three buildings, asking them to vacate them, and has also decided to undertake detailed structure audit of the remaining 24 buildings," Kharwadkar said.
