In the bin: BBMP plans to fine us for garbageNov. 8: Taking a leaf out of San Franciscio’s book, BBMP commissioner Siddaiah said the civic body was planning to introduce an user fee for garbage disposal, based on the quantum of garbage produced.
San Francisco council does not tax citizens but collects a fee for the garbage they generate.
Each household in Bengaluru will have to pay a fee for garbage disposal, the commissioner said while making a presentation on solid waste management before a delegation from San Francisco. Rates will differ for commercial entities, hotels, nursing homes and marriage halls, he said.
In rare praise, Mr Robert Haley, recycling programme manager from the department of environment of San Francisco said: “Bengaluru is dealing with solid waste management effectively.”
Bengaluru and San Francisco signed an MoU on Nov. 30, 2009, to assist each other in the areas of parks, education, SWM, sewage and water among others.
