Collector upset with ongoing UGD works

KADAPA: District Collector Shashi Bhushan inspected the ongoing underground drainage works in Housing Board Colony, Prakashnagar and Mrutyunjayakunta areas here and expressed dissatisfaction at the quality of works.

While inspecting sanitation and underground drainage works, he expressed discontent at leaving pits dug up for underground drainage works uncovered. He directed municipal officials to ensure that garbage did not pile up but cleared regularly and interacted with the local people. People complained that vagabonds were causing nuisance in and around Rajiv Park particularly in the evenings.

When the Collector asked Sanitary Inspector Ramana on the sanitary staff strength, the latter replied that 10 masons and 175 sanitary workers were on muster rolls in Kadapa and they included 75 women. Of them, 10 per cent were not attending to duties, the Sanitary Inspector complained.

Mr. Shashi Bhushar Kumar later inspected Mrutyunjayakunta and watched stagnant water-filled pits. He directed municipal officials to drain out stagnant water by deploying electric motors. The Collector expressed disenchantment at non-completion of even 40 per cent of underground drainage works commenced four years ago. He told officials to provide basic amenities to permanently pave way for rain and drain water from problematic areas under Rajiv Awas Yojana in 2011-12.

Municipal Commissioner D. John Samson, Public Health EE Mohan, DE Kesava Reddy, Municipal Health Officer Vinod Kumar and staff participated.

Collector visits old Bhopal to earmark parking places

In the bid to provide parking places in old Bhopal, District Collector Nikunj Shrivastava on Wednesday visited Budhwara, Machhali Market, Itawara, Manglawara and Jumerati localities to earmark places where parking could be developed. Many other officials of PWD and district administration accompanied him.

Shrivastava further directed officials of Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) to start the Machhali Market soon and also to maintain cleanliness in the markets.

Expressing annoyance over the encroachment by roadside vendors in Azad Market, he directed officials to remove encroachment soon.

He further instructed officials to remove outdated vehicles, parked roadside obstructing traffic. He also directed them to use tiles interlocking in the repairing of parking places in sub-stations of Ibrahimpura and Aliganj and said that businessmen would also be benefited with the good parking places.

During his visit, Shrivastava directed officials of BMC to remove encroachments soon from the main market and if anybody was found doing encroachment, strict action should be taken against him.

Delta city has system to trace abuse of sewers

MANGALORE: Traffic management was a nightmare in Delta city, However its Mayor, Lois E Jackson, hoped that a highway upgradation project worth $200 million will ease the traffic congestion. She left the audience startled when she pointed out that they had a system in place to track down individual's emptying gasoline or hazardous chemicals into the sewers.

The audience were clearly impressed when the Mayor informed that garbage management started with creating awareness.

The residents were told to treat garbage as a resource and an asset. The garbage is segregated at sources, where the tins, glasses is dumped in blue boxes, newspapers in black bags and other papers in Yellow bags.

"Fifteen per cent of the population which is below one lakh comprises people from South Asia," she informed and highlighted developmental projects in her city which included the construction of a new terminal for their international airport at a cost of $6 million.

MoU signed

Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) and Corporation of Delta, British Columbia, Canada, signed an economic development memorandum of understanding (MoU) endorsing collaboration in areas of economy, culture and solid waste management among others.

MCC Mayor Rajani Dugganna and Delta Mayor Lois E Jackson exchanged MoUs at a programme organised in the MCC Council hall on Tuesday.

They stressed that the new relationship forged with the twinning pact will prove to be mutually beneficial. Lois Jackson vowed to come back again for the benefit of the people whom she represented.

The delegation, including Chief Administration Officer George V Harvie and Manjith Kaur had flown 8,000 miles to promote economic ties.

MCC, playing the role of a host to the hilt, accorded a rousing reception to the delegation from the Delta city.

Delta has only six councillors

Initially CAO George V Harvie outlined the structure, functioning of their corporation, the similarities between 'Sister cities' and the challenges they faced. Delta Council formed in 1879, today has one Mayor, six councillors and 980 employees.

Jackson who became the first woman councillor in 1972 has been the undefeated Mayor since 1999.

Delta city's revenue comes from property taxes (55 per cent), fees and other utilities. Despite an external debt of $65 million, the council has established many projects.
