BBMP moots Board of visitors for hospitals

Bangalore, September 5, DHNS:

The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike has mooted Board of Visitors for the Palike referral hospitals and maternity hospitals to ensure transparency at the state-run health facilities.

According to Palike officials, the proposal was put forth by the BBMP Commissioner Siddaiah in a meeting held on Saturday. The proposed Board at the zonal level would comprise at least seven members including local corporators, zonal engineers and medical officers. “We are particularly looking at ensuring transparency in the management of our hospitals,” said a BBMP official.

The Board would look into hospital management and identify problem areas in its functioning. It would update the Commissioner and the Council at regular intervals on the possible solutions to the problems faced by the hospitals.

The Saturday meeting between the Health Department officials and the Commissioner largely revolved round the procurement of medicines at the BBMP referral hospitals which lack essential drugs in certain parts of the City.

The BBMP has seven referral hospitals and 26 maternity hospitals under its jurisdiction. The newly-elected corporators had been critical of the functioning of the Health Department at meetings, terming it ‘unhealthy department.’

Officials said the procurement of drugs for diseases such as dengue and chikungunya have been of concern in the recent past. “With the Board in place it would be easier to keep a tab on the list of drugs which need to be purchased in large quantities,” an official said.
The government has accorded permission to the Palike to fill up nearly 70 posts of doctors through Karnataka Public Service Commission.

CM plans concrete ride for Bangaloreans

BANGALORE: Fed up of tarred roads? Well, if the CM has his way, Bangaloreans can soon walk or drive on concrete roads.

Buoyed by the success of the white topping or concrete overlay, which has been used at the Hosur-Madiwala junction, B S Yeddyurappa on Tuesday said the government will make major roads in the city concrete.

Yeddyurappa directed the BBMP, BDA and other urban local bodies to identify the major roads so that white-topping can be overlaid.

Inaugurating the Madiwala underpass near Hosur Road, Yeddyurappa said the white-topping roads have higher longevity compared to asphalt ones. "If white-topping is used, then it can last for nearly 20-30 years. Though it may be 20% more expensive, once laid it doesn't require much maintenance. The lifespan of asphalt roads is only three years. We'll initiate this project through the PPP model so that the government is burdened. Many companies have shown interest in doing the white-topping, and the government is negotiating with them,'' he said.

The identified company will be given advertisement-display rights for revenue or it can have own ads. "The government has sufficient funds," the CM added.

NTC promises BMC, Mhada one-third of mill land

MUMBAI: The state had issued a notice to the BMC stating that no development on Podar Mills and Bharat Mills can be allowed till the National Textile Corporation (NTC) gives a third of the open space to Mhada and BMC. Following this, the NTC has promised to give land immediately to Mhada and BMC.

According to the formula worked out by the state, each mill owner has to surrender one-third of the open space to Mhada for housing mill workers and another third of the open space to the BMC for setting up gardens.

About three weeks ago, the two mills were bought by Indiabulls. NTC sold its 8.3-acrejj Bharat Textile Mill in Worli to Indiabulls Infra Estate Limited for Rs 1,505 crore. The amount is double the reserve price of Rs 750 crore set by NTC, while Podar Mills was bought for Rs 474 crore, at almost double the reserve price of Rs 250 crore.
