Corporators pull up civic body for incomplete nullah work

Express News Service Tags : nullah-desilting work, mumbai Posted: Thu Jun 10 2010, 00:16 hrs

Mumbai:

Lashing out at the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation for incomplete nullah-desilting work, the corporators on Wednesday threatened disciplinary action against officials ranging from ward-level engineers to the deputy municipal commissioners. They also rubbished civic body’s claims of completing 95% nullah cleaning work and said that the work was not upto the mark.

Congress MLA and leader of the Opposition in the BMC Rajhans Singh said that despite all corporators and MLAs repeatedly urging the BMC to carry out the nullah cleaning work properly, the administration has been lax. “I am not squarely blaming the Shiv Sena-BJP combine because it is in power. All parties are to be blamed in that case. The main culprit are officials who are not making sure that contractors carry out the work properly,” said Singh.

Open nullahs in the city have been a cause of concern as dumping of garbage chokes them resulting in flooding during monsoons.

The BMC has spent about Rs 70 crore in awarding contracts for carrying out desilting work throughout the year. Corporators complained that despite the contract terms require contractors to carry out the desilting work regularly throughout the year, it is done just a month before the rains.

NCP leader and corporator from Antop Hill, Niyaz Vanu, said, “Many minor and major nullahs are still in bad condition in my area. There is a need to carry out desilting work regularly. The BMC wakes up just weeks before the monsoon. In my area, less than 45 per cent has been completed so far.”

Shiv Sena corportaor and standing committee chairman Rahul Shewale said that unless action is taken against officials, the nullah work will continue to remain unsatisfactory. “The vigilance department should inspect all nullahs within the next two days and give us a report. Officials in areas where the work is not done should be penalized,” said Shewale

Additional municipal commissioner AK Singh said that work will be completed before the monsoon. “Ninety-five per cent work has been completed. But whatever is incomplete, we will finish it at the ealiest,” said Singh.

Caste documents invalid, corporator disqualified

Express News Service Tags : fake document, Malan Bhintade, corporator Posted: Thu Jun 10 2010, 00:01 hrs

Pune:  The caste verification committee has disqualified Malan Bhintade, an Independent corporator of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), after finding that the documents she had submitted with her nomination were invalid.

Bhintade had contested the February 2007 civic elections from the Rajiv Gandhi Zoo ward (number 142) in Katraj area as an OBC candidate. Digambar Davari, her rival from the BJP, had alleged that she had submitted fake caste certificates while she actually belonged to the Maratha community.

Davari had raised the allegation before the PMC, but the election officer directed him to the Social Welfare Department. Bhintade subsequently won the election.

Davari later produced various documents, including caste and school certificates, claiming that Bhintade actually belonged to the Maratha caste and hence was in the open category. These documents were submitted to the caste verification committee. A writ petition was also filed in the Bombay High Court thereafter. In March 2007, the committee held the corporator’s OBC certificate invalid. Following this, Bhintade approached the High Court. The court again directed both the cases to the caste verification committee, which once again held her certificate invalid. After a number of hearing and petitions, the matter came up before the committee and on March 23 this year, it gave its verdict holding Bhintade’s candidature invalid.

Nandkishor Gosavi, who followed up the matter in the High Court and with the committee along with Davari, said, “This case will dissuade people from filing fake certificates for elections.”

Ahead of rains, 770 told to leave 24 buildings

Express News Service Tags : 24 mumbai buildings extremely dangerous, mumbai Posted: Tue Jun 08 2010, 23:35 hrs

Mumbai: As pre-monsoon showers hit Mumbai over the weekend, the government has given one week to residents of 24 buildings identified as “extremely dangerous”; otherwise they will be forcibly evacuated.

Mumbai Guardian Minister Jayant Patil and Minister of State for Housing Sachin Ahir visited some “dangerous” buildings in Tardeo on Monday and asked the residents to leave, saying the buildings could collapse during the monsoon. Ahir said the 24 buildings have 770 occupants of whom 241 have already left.

“We have requested them to leave as they are also putting lives of others in danger. The buildings have been declared beyond economically feasible repairs. They have been given one week, else they will face forcible eviction under Section 88(3) of the MHADA Act,” Ahir said.

“We have offered them the option of moving to the Dharavi transit camps where 500 units have been marked for them.” Around 700 buildings declared dangerous by the BMC have also been served notices.
