Patiala:  Puran Singh allegedly used to burn dead animals, make powder of their bones and sell them

The Patiala Municipal Corporation has issued a showcause notice to its contractor for causing public nuisance at the dumping ground in the city.

The matter had come to light yesterday when the residents caught hold of two persons, said to be close to a Congress leader, who were making powder of animal bones. The residents blackened the faces of the two men, gave them a thrashing before handing them over to the police.

According to sources, contractor Puran Singh was hired for removing dead animals from the town. But he was allegedly using the dumping ground for burning caresses, making powder of their bones and then sell them for a handsome return. Patiala MC’s health officer Yadawinder Singh Banga said a showcause notice had been issued to the contractor. Banga further confirmed that the power made out of bones of caresses was being used in various products like bone china, medicines, toothpaste, energy drinks, besides other things including chocolate.

The MC authorities said that besides causing pollution and public nuisance through the illegal activity of burning animals, the animal contractor was playing with the health of the common man in the town.

PMC to crack down on liquor sale without licence

Express News Service Tags : liquor, corporation Posted: Fri May 21 2010, 00:37 hrs

Pune:  Municipal Commissioner Mahesh Zagade on Thursday assured that the civic administration will crack down on all restaurants and hotels for selling liquor and tobacco products without a licence.

“The civic administration issues licenses to all eating joints that exist in its jurisdiction. Those with a license for selling food are not supposed to sell anything else. The license of joints selling other products will be cancelled,” he said, in response to a discussion on illegal sale of products in restaurants and hotels.

The issue was raised by corporator Avinash Salve on the open sale of addictive products across the city. “The open sale of products that are used for addiction by the youth is on the rise. This is affecting a large section of the population. There should be some control by the civic body before the situation goes out of hand,” he said.

BJP corporators Seema Sirdeshpande and Vikas Matkari pointed out that there is open sale of tobacco and other addictive products in front of the educational institutions but no action has been taken by the administration.

Shiv Sena corporator Shyam Deshpande said the addicts use the public toilet constructed by the civic body for consumption of addictive products.

In his reply, Zagade said the role of the civic administration is limited to the sale of medicinal drugs that are being used for addiction but it will take up the issue with the state food and drug administration.

The excise department would be urged to act on illegal sale of liquor in the PMC area, he said, adding that the network of social workers with the PMC urban welfare development will be involved in the campaign against the consumption of addictive products in slums.
