Proposal to shut wayside liquor shops

Special Correspondent

The State Road Safety Council is considering recommending to the government to close down liquor outlets adjacent to State and national highways to reduce instances of accidents arising out of drunken driving.

In its first meeting here on Tuesday under the chairmanship of Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy, the council discussed the ill-effects of liquor shops adjacent to highways. Mr. Reddy said the Excise Department would have to take the final decision and the department might be urged not to renew licences of such shops from June. The Minister told The Hindu that the council would take a final decision in its next meeting.

Meanwhile, Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Commissioner M. Lakshminarayana urged the council to consider providing government subsidy to those willing to operate Nano and other small cars in Bangalore. Such vehicles would not only ensure safety of passengers but also would reduce pollution. Principal Secretary, Transport, P. Ravi Kumar, Additional Director-General of Police (CIRS), N.S. Megharikh, and representatives from transport organisations were present.

Cuncolim Municpal Council gets GSUDA nod for commercial complex

MARGAO: Giving a boost to the plans for Cuncolim Municpal Council (CMC), the Goa State Urban Development Agency (GSUDA) has approved the civic body's proposed commercial building complex.

Earlier this year, the CMC had decided to drop the much delayed 1.6 crore health club project in favour of a new commercial project which was to be built using the government's golden jubilee signature grant.

While confirming that the GSUDA has approved the council's proposal for the construction of new complex, CMC chairperson Devendra Dessai stated that shops and commercial establishments along the national highway will be shifted to the complex. Dessai also informed soil testing for the project had been carried out and that GSUDA officials are in the process of preparing the estimates.

The CMC chief said that shopkeepers have agreed to shift to the commercial complex once it is completed. "This will go a long way to ease the flow of traffic along the busy stretch of national highway 17 passing through Cuncolim," Dessai said.

He said the council will now approach the town and country planning department for getting the necessary permissions.

Dessai also stated that there is also a proposal to acquire land under survey number 367/1, located between the national highway 17 and the site of the proposed commercial building complex, for creating a parking lot. Sources said the estimated cost of the proposed commercial complex is 1.45 crore.
