Work on GCDA laser show project begins

Kochi: Construction works of the musical-water-fountain-cum-laser-show at Rajendra Maidan, proposed by the Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA), started on Friday. The development authority initiated the project after conducting a feasibility study.

“A Bangalore-based firm with proven track record in setting up similar projects in other cities is carrying out the project. The works are expected to be completed in three months,” said N. Venugopal, GCDA chairman.

The existing stage at the Maidan will be demolished for setting up the musical fountain and a new stage will be constructed adjacent to it. The GCDA proposed the Rs 3 crore projects as part of the Marine Drive entertainment zone.

The show would be performed on a water screen which would double up as a musical fountain.  It is expected that the project would be able to realize the investment in two years. The format and content of the show will be changed every three months.

On October 15, Minister for Urban Affairs, Manjalamkuzhi Ali, formally inaugurated the construction work of the laser show project. The GCDA has also proposed a mega aquarium and cable car in Marine Drive to promote the city’s tourism potential.

Meanwhile, the construction of the Thevara – Thykoodam bund road, another major project of GCDA was also started. “Leveling of the recently acquired plots and clearing the structures in the area near Kasthurba Nagar have begun.”

Telecom firms to regularise illegal OFCs

Telecom firms have finally fallen in line by agreeing to regularise the unauthorised optical fibre cables (OFCs) laid across the City.

N R Ramesh, chairperson of the Palike committee on OFCs, said the firms had agreed to pay the fine and regularise the cables laid by them. The decision was arrived at a meeting chaired by Mayor B S Satyanarayana, in which the executives of the telecom firms were present. On Monday, the BBMP will enter into an agreement with the telecom firms to disclose and regularise all the unauthorised OFCs laid in the City.

Ramesh said the BBMP had introduced e-filing system to apply for permission to lay cables. The stipulated fee could be paid online. The request should come from the chief executive officers of the firms, either in person or by e-mail. The application should mention the total length of the road to be dug up for laying cables. The OFC division of the Palike will prepare a bill detailing the OFC laying charges, ground rent and road cutting charges. The telecom firms will have to pay the amount online. “The system, if implemented, will fetch Palike a minimum of Rs 500 crore,” Ramesh claimed.

The Palike had constituted a committee headed by Ramesh to look into the irregularities in laying of OFCs in the City. The panel tabled its 4,700-page report in the Palike Council meeting recently.

Mild Tension during Demolition of 21 Illegal Plastic Units at Kattedan

Mild tension prevailed at Kattedan area here on Saturday when the town planning wing of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) demolished as many as 21 illegal plastic building units.

Though the owners of the plastic units resisted the demolitions, the GHMC staff with the help of the police went ahead with the demolitions.

Zonal commissioner of South Zone Ravi Kiran told Express that the residents of Kattedan, Gaganpahad, Shastripuram and other nearby areas have been complaining to the corporation over the prevailing pollution in the said localities for a long time.

These unauthorised plastic units have been recycling the used plastic material by burning them in the open causing pollution leading to health hazards like breathing problems, vomiting, nausea among others. As these residential colonies were thickly populated, they have been requesting the corporation to remove the units.

The demolitions which started at 6 a.m. continued up to 10 a.m. under the supervision of city planner and assistant city planner and others.

Ravi Kiran said that six illegal plastic  units near Mir Alam Tank were also sealed by the corporation on Saturday.
