Stop digging roads till further orders, says Mayor

Staff Reporter

Mayor B.S. Sathyanarayana on Friday ordered Internet service (IS) and telecommunication service (TS) providers to stop digging up roads and other places to lay the optical fibre cables (OFC) till further instructions are issued.

His decision came soon after a committee headed by N.R. Ramesh, in its interim report, stated that OFC service providers have laid nearly 65,000 km of ducts although BBMP’s permission had been sought for only 6,500 km. The committee alleged that several leading telecom and Internet service providers had laid cables without authorisation resulting in losses running into crores of rupees to the civic body. Mr. Ramesh demanded that the issue be probed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
