Kerala State Urban Development Project to fix 400 defunct sodium lamps in corporation limit

KOZHIKODE: The office of Kerala State Urban Development Project (KSUDP), attached to Kozhikode city corporation has decided to carry out repair of the sodium lamps installed in various parts of the city under the KSUDP scheme.

A decision in this regard was taken after a joint inspection conducted by officials of KSUDP and the engineering wing of the corporation to know the status of the 400 sodium lamps installed in the city.

It was decided to carry out a joint-inspection after people in the corporation limit registered complaints with the corporation about the non-functioning sodium lamps.

Delay on the part of KSUDP officials in officially handing over the lights to the corporation is learnt to be the reason why the lights remained defunct. Under the city development initiative of the corporation, KSUDP had installed a total of 400 sodium vapour lamps.

Lamps were installed in the stretch from Thondayadu to Medical college Junction, Mini bypass, Mavoor Road and the stretch from Arayidathupalam to Eranhipalam at an estimated cost of more than Rs 50 lakh. KSUDP had also erected sodium lamps at Mananchira and Pottammel Junction in 2009. According to KSUDP officials, almost all of the 400 sodium vapour lamps are currently defunct. Disruption in power supply owing to damaged cables is learnt to be the reason why the lamps have remained non-operational.

Project manager of KSUDP Somasekhara Kaimal said he has already dispatched a letter to the contractors who installed the sodium lamps, asking them to carry out the repair works which falls under their purview.

"Many of the lights had become non-functional owing to disruption of power supply in the cables which connects the lamps. We are in the process of making the streetlights functional by repairing lamps which need minor works. The rest will be carried out with help from the corporation," he said.

Civic body extends contract deadline of waste management company

RANCHI: Amid reports of fracas between A2Z Waste Management Company and Ranchi Municipal Corporation (RMC) over pending cleanliness work in the city, the civic body has extended the deadline of its contract with the firm.

The company has had a shoddy reputation so far and in several cases, the contract was terminated for flouting rules or poor performance

Before coming to Ranchi, the company was working with municipal corporations in other cities but in most cases its contract was terminated at most places due to breach of contract and non- performance.

Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation health officer R Yadav said, "A2Z has worked with us for around one-and a-half years but we had to terminate the contract as it was not functioning properly and also breached the contract norms."

Similar was the case in Jaipur, where the company was asked to stop work within a year of their signing the contract and the corporation seized the security money of Rs 1.20 crore which the company deposited with the civic body.

Jaipur health officer DK Meena said, "After we seized the security money, the company moved court and the matter is still pending. The company was not working properly and flouting rules openly."

The story is similar in Aligarh, Kanpur and Patna where the company was stopped from working after one or two years of their signing the contracts.

Despite having a 'not so clean' history, the company was hired by RMC for 30 years in 2011. Deputy mayor Sanjiv Vijayavargiya said he had no idea about the history of the company. "The proposal of hiring the company was kept in the board meeting and on seeing the presentation we thought that the company will do well. However, the whole thing backfired. Those officials who were involved in appointing it, right from the mayor to CEO and deputy CEO - all have changed."

Vijayavargiya said if the corporation tried to remove the company it will move court and then RMC will not be able to take out fresh tender for the cleanliness work of the city.

"We are doing a new experiment in which respective ward councillors will be given the responsibility of cleanliness and if this works, we will be able to remove the company.

Vadodara Municipal Corporation proposes Rs 390cr works under JnNURM

VADODARA: After a lull in taking up development projects in the city, Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) has decided to give impetus to works again. The civic body will put up detailed project reports (DPRs) for projects totalling to Rs 390 crore under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JnNURM).

The civic body had initially presented two DPRs to the state government for a sewage treatment plant (STP) at Sayajipura and construction of a storm water drain in the eastern parts of the city to divert rain water entering the city from the eastern parts. The State Level Steering Committee (SLSC) for JnNURM asked the civic body to get a nod form the standing committee for these projects and also suggested that more projects should be taken up by the civic body.

The civic body decided to include six more DPRs in its list of projects to be submitted to JnNURM. These include a new STP at Atladara, a flyover at Gotri over the Harinagar crossroads, construction of a bridge across Vishwamitri river to connect Harni and Sama, water supply projects for Makarpura GIDC and Vasna, purchase of buses for urban mobility and a new service line for water supply from Nimeta to the national highway. Some of the new works like Gotri flyover and procurement of buses have been on VMC's list for quite some time now. The civic body has now decided to put these for funding under JnNURM. All the eight works put together amount to Rs 390.12 crore.

The standing committee has given a nod for these and they will now be taken to the general board.
