With Outer Ring Road (ORR) becoming vulnerable for fatal road accidents resulting in precious lives being lost due to rash and negligent driving, Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) has decided to produce short films and documentaries on ORR to create awareness on safety aspects and safe driving.

It has also decided to produce short films and documentaries on Hussainsagar for creating awareness among citizens to keep the lake clean. The short films and documentaries would be screened at various important public places, cinema theatres and multiplexes soon. The HMDA officials told Express that the duration of the films would be of 30/60/120 seconds. The voice over will be in Telugu, English and Hindi.

The 159-km Outer Ring Road connecting Patancheru-Shamshabad-Hayathnagar-Medchal-Patancheru is providing connectivity to various state and national highways, to bypass Hyderabad city.

The ORR is constructed as orbital linkage to decongest the traffic flow on the existing major arterial roads in Hyderabad as well as a road-cum-area development project, since its aim is the development of well-planned and well-connected urban settlements around the Hyderabad Metropolitan Area (HMA).

Because of its high-speed design and current low traffic volume, frequent accidents are taking place which are fatal in nature. In the recent times, several accidents led to deaths of a number of people. These could be avoided to a large extent if commuters followed safe driving rules.

Similarly, the HMDA has decided to produce short films and documentaries on Hussainsagar for creating awareness among the people as the lake has rich biodiversity in the form of butterflies, birds, fishes and other aquatic life.

Earlier, the lake was known for irrigation and drinking water facilities and also for its rich biodiversity. It was constructed in 1562.

HDMC to initiate legal action against sangha, ‘for damaging public amenities’

Staff Correspondent

The Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation (HDMC) is set to initiate legal action against the Karnatak Vidyavardhak Sangha (KVS) for “damaging civic amenities.”

The KVS and Hubli-Dharwad Nagarika Parisara Samiti headed by its executive committee member Shankar Kumbi came under the scanner for damaging a footpath adjacent to the KVS premises while planting saplings on Sunday. In this connection HDMC issued a show-cause notice to the KVS general secretary and gave three days’ time to reply.

HDMC zonal officer V. Shridhar said KVS replied on Thursday but failed to furnish correct explanation for damaging the footpath. In their reply they conceded that the pit was dug on the footpath illegally. At the same time they tried to defend themselves saying that there were trees planted on footpath on other locations of the city.

“This reply makes no sense. The trees planted on other footpaths were there much before the footpaths were constructed; HDMC saved them while constructing the footpath. This, however, does not mean that the existing footpath can be dug up to plant saplings,” he said.

Mr. Shridhar added that HDMC would issue one more letter to KVS asking them to reconstruct the footpath and shift the trees on their own. Otherwise, HDMC would take up the footpath reconstruction works and recover the expenses from KVS. The monetary loss caused by damaging the footpath has yet to be ascertained.

HDMC is concerned for the environment, but is it right to damage civic amenities in this manner? he asked. Mr. Shridhar stated that HDMC was compelled to initiate legal action against KVS in this regard, lest it encourage others to damage civic amenities “in the name of saving the environment.”
