Kanpur Municipal Corporation squad removes hoardings

KANPUR: The squads of Kanpur Municipal Corporation, on Monday, removed many hoardings, banners and posters erected at prominent spots for Narendra Modi's rally. The local unit of Bharatiya Janata Party accused the civic authorities of adopting a partisan approach while removing the hoardings.

City BJP chief Surendra Maithani alleged that the authorities have been acting in a biased manner. "Action taken by KMC staff is selective and unfair. Why the KMC staff didn't remove the hoardings of Samajwadi Party politicians, including chief minister Akhilesh Yadav's erected in almost every nook and corner of the city. But posters, banners and hoardings of BJP leaders are being removed," he said.

KMC official R Shukla said: "Such allegations are baseless. We have been strict and acting against all illegal hoardings. We haven't spared anyone."

Defending the KMC, he added, "Our staff is not at all selective. it is initiating action only against illegal hoardings without any political consideration."

BJP spokesman Satendra Pandey said if authorities were serious about the removal of hoardings, then they should remove all the illegal hoardings put up by the Samajwadi as well as other political parties, including Bahujan Samaj Party and Congress.

"We will stage protest if such cheap tactics against us continues," Pandey said. He said the BJP had paid the fees to the authorities for putting up the hoardings and accused the KMC of acting at the behest of the ruling party.

KR Market has never established a reputation for cleanliness, but when Mayor B S Satyanarayana visited the market on Monday, he had a stern warning for the traders: Either maintain cleanliness and follow waste management or face the total closure of the market for a week.

Outraged at the traders for their lack of civic sense — despite the many cleaning programmes conducted by Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) within the market area for the last five weeks — Satyanarayana lambasted them for ignoring the initiatives of volunteers to clean up the area.

“Every Monday, as a part of the cleaning programme, students from various colleges have cleaned the area.Yet, the condition of the market remains the same and traders are not practising waste management,” he said and demanded to know how the traders could work in such conditions.

“Won't your health get spoiled if you are sitting in the middle of garbage? How will the customers buy vegetables, flowers and fruits in such conditions,” he asked.

Several traders, however, blamed pourakarmikas for the problem. One of the traders, speaking on the condition of anonymity, told Deccan Herald, that,  “We are maintaining cleanliness but the pourakarmikas are not removing garbage from the market area properly. It is not our fault.”

‘Will file complaint’

The mayor has promised to file a complaint if the traders continue to ignore his words. “I want the traders to carry out a cleaning drive here every Wednesday and I will come to inspect this drive,” he said. “Students cannot clean the market every week as maintaining hygiene inside the market premises is the responsibility of the people working here. The college students have been roped in by the Palike merely to create awareness among the traders.”

Satyanarayana also complained that a few traders have been negligent in making regular rent payments to the Palike.  On Monday, students from the Jyoti Institute of Technology took part in the cleaning programme.

GVMC to allow crackers outlets at Jail Road

Visakhapatnam: Despite public demand to shift  firecracker outlets to safer places in the city, authorities of Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation have decided to issue temporary trade license to set up firecracker stalls round Jail Road one of  the busiest  junctions in the city.

The move will fetch Vizag Corporation  a  revenue of Rs 40 lakh or more, but at the cost of  ignoring  public safety. Around 290 cracker outlets will be opened on Old Jail Road and 100 more at various places in the city this Diwali. The market functions only once a year during the festive season and attracts  customers from different parts of city and its outskirts.

Sources in fire and emergency service department said  that Old Jail Road is  not a suitable place for setting up cracker outlets as it is a crowded place and in case of a fire mishap at any outlet, there is a possibility of great  human loss.

Sources also said that despite their directions, firework dealers and retailers fail to adhere to safety regulations such as stipulated space between shops, fire-proof sheets for ceiling and shops to have  fire extinguishers  to prevent  untoward incidents during the festival season.

Speaking to this correspondent, fire prevention wing of GVMC, M. Sri Hari Jagannath claimed that as they could not find any other appropriate place to shift the cracker outlets, the Old Jail Road area is the only available option for setting up the crackers outlets this year also.

He said that they are chalking out plans to limit the number of the outlets and keep two fire tenders and two  ambulances  stationed at the venue at the cost of the shop owners.  Sources said 400 applications have been received for  license to set up stalls.
