Pune Municipal Corporation to buy helmets for firemen

PUNE: To make fire fighters in the city better equipped at work, the Pune Municipal Corporation's (PMC) standing committee on Monday approved the procurement of as many as 300 firefighting helmets. These helmets will not only be helpful during fire disasters, but will also come handy while dealing with calamities like a wall or a building collapse and during flood.

"They are firmer glass composite fire-fighting helmets. The cost of one helmet is around Rs 29,000. The civic body will spend around Rs 89 lakh," said Vishal Tambe, chairman of standing committee of the PMC, on Monday. He added that these helmets can handle fire involving chemicals in a more effective way and will protect firemen from smoke and heat.

The civic body has been taking important steps to improve the firefighting system. In March, the standing committee had approved a tender for buying 100 special fire suits worth Rs 1.70 crore for the fire brigade. Each suit costs around Rs 1.5 lakh. The civic body had sought financial aid of Rs 500 crore from the 13th Finance Commission and had sent an elaborate plan to the state government in 2011.

According to the plan, one of the priorities for the fire department was to increase the number of fire stations in the city from the existing 10 to at least 25. They wanted to cover the municipal area spread over 243 sq km. Each fire station would have to be well-equipped with fire fighting machinery and adequate staff strength, as stated in the plan. The fire brigade would also need over 300 breathing apparatus and fire entry suits. As per the plan, the fire brigade has sought 22 ambulances and other vehicles.

Meanwhile, the committee also gave its approval for buying CCTV cameras for the Cantonment Water Works and sanctioned the proposal to appoint a consultant for restoration and repair works in Shaniwarwada.

Nagpur Municipal Corporation to serve another notice as Scientific Society fails to reply

NAGPUR: The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) is likely to serve another show cause notice to Scientific Cooperative Housing Society for illegally allotting parking space meant for its community hall near Aath Rasta Square to Purti Super Bazaar, a group run by former BJP chief Nitin Gadkari.

The civic body had dispatched the first notice to the Laxmi Nagar-based society on September 10 while asking it to submit a reply within a week, but it apparently failed to do so even after 13 days.

Assistant commissioner with Dhantoli Zone Mahesh Morone told TOI that he had not received any reply till Monday evening and would dispatched another one if the society failed to respond. "We're also seeking documents related to the supermarket from various offices like NIT. If we find anything illegal in them, we will straightway initiate action," he warned.

Interestingly, the society's secretary Arvind Gadhikar informed that they had submitted a detailed reply on Monday evening. He refused to divulge details saying that he was in an important meeting. But Morone clarified that he had checked all postage before leaving the office and hadn't received any reply from the society.

Members in the BJP-dominated society, who didn't wished to be named, told TOI that the executive committee of the BJP-dominated Scientific Society had conducted closed door talks with Gadkari's Central India Multipurpose Cooperative Society which operates the Purti Bazaar. The meeting was attended by society chairman Vishwas Khot apart from Gadhikar. Both sides decided to explore the ways to allegedly suppress the records by manipulating documents and also "managing" NMC officials, ruled by the saffron party.

Even efforts were made to regularize Purti Bazaar which was paying a paltry rent of Rs65,000-Rs 70,000 per month against market price of Rs2.25 lakh. All such efforts were made keeping in mind that Gadkari would be contesting the next year's general elections from the city and nobody wants any controversy over his name, the members alleged.

The members are planning to corner the society office-bearers, particularly Khot, Gadhikar and others, over the issue during forthcoming annual general meeting (AGM) on September 29. They alleged that total mismanagement and massive corruption by those at the helm of affairs resulted in massive losses to the society coffers.

The civic body's inefficiency can be gauged over the fact that they took over a month to issue the notice after TOI exposed how the residents were facing innumerable parking problems as visitors to the hall parked their vehicles in front of their homes.

The corporation sought an explanation from the society while asking them to submit a copy of sanctioned map of the entire building housing the flats, hall and parking area along with ownership documents. Even the society had issued a notice to Purti to vacate the premises earlier in 2006 but failed to take any action under apparent pressure of the former BJP chief.

"We're also seeking documents related to the supermarket from various offices like NIT. If we find anything illegal in them, we will straightway initiate action," Mahesh Morone, assistant commissioner, Dhantoli zone, said.

Snowballing controversy

  • NMC issues first notice to Scientific Society for illegally allotting parking space to Purti Super Bazaar.
  • Society fails to reply within the deadline set by the civic body.
  • Society secretary claims a detailed reply has been submitted.
  • Dhantoli Zone says no reply was received till Monday evening.
  • Society members conduct closed door meeting with Gadkari's Central India Multipurpose Cooperative Society which operates Purti Bazaar.
  • Both sides decide to explore the ways to suppress the records to clear the ex-BJP chief's name.

Chief minister urges Mysore City Corporation to fix potholes on priority

MYSORE: It is 11 days for the inauguration of Dasara festival, but the city is not yet ready to play host. The very fact angered chief minister Siddaramaiah here on Monday.

The CM was smiling when he checked in to Mysore to review Dasara preparedness. However, Siddaramaiah, a native of Mysore, got angry when he got to know that the roads around the Mysore Palace are not fixed. He has got Rs 19 crore released to Mysore City Corporation to take up road works in CBD and other civil works to beautify the city to host Dasara.

The CM was annoyed after facing a volley of questions from reporters about the preparedness or the lack of it. He summoned MCC commissioner P G Ramesh and asked him to explain the alleged lapses. "Yakappa madilla? (Why have you not attended to road repair works?) Do you know how to do it? You should have done it by now," he told him.

"There are potholes on many roads. They should have been fixed by now," he said, and defended the official machinery, by blaming it on above-average rainfall. Pointing out that Dasara festival will be inaugurated on October 5, he asked the civic officials not to go in for road asphalting now. Fix the road problems temporarily and take up roads asphalting after Dasara, he said.

Siddaramaiah was so infuriated with the officials that he asked the reporters to focus on the positives and promote Dasara. "Please Dasara bagge bariri (kindly write about the festival)," he said.

He expressed unhappiness on getting to know that the transport department has exempted only inter-state vehicles heading to Mysore district from paying entry tax. This is contrary to the decision taken at the high power committee headed by him.

When he was told that tourists will face difficulty as they cannot go to even KRS which is in Mandya district, DC C Shikha, who is Dasara special officer, told the CM that the high-power committee had not set any such conditions

However, the transport department has restricted it to tourists heading to Mysore district and has cut it to 15 days from October 1. He called up the transport secretary and ordered him to send the file to the finance department on Monday itself to extend the concession for a month. He ordered the official to exempt all tourist vehicles entering the state from paying entry tax.

He, however, was appreciative of Shikha and Mysore regional commissioner M V Jayanthi, saying the two senior women officers are doing good work on the Dasara front.
