Mayor wants State to scrap merger order

Special Correspondent

Mayor Mohammad Majid Hussain on Monday wanted the State government to immediately take back the orders on merger of 35 gram panchayats with the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC).

Speaking to the presspersons after the GHMC Council meeting here, the Mayor said, the municipal corporation was struggling with its meagre means to take care of present jurisdiction and adding more areas was only going to create problems.

“The orders were issued in a hasty manner without giving any clarity on a host of issues including budget and the roles of different departments. In fact, we at the GHMC do not understand our role itself in these merged areas.”

On the GHMC officials taking over the merged areas and holding meetings with officials from there, Mr. Majid Hussain said neither he nor any of the elected representatives were consulted before the move.

Today the Council rejected the merger and asked the Commissioner not to take up development works there with GHMC budget.

“If they still go ahead, then it will be perceived as contempt of the Council,” he quipped.

The Mayor contended that the merger move would not only end up as an injustice to the area and population of civic body but also those in newly merged ones.

“Frankly speaking, given our financial constraints and manpower shortage, we are unable to do justice to present jurisdiction. There is no way we can stretch our limited means,” he added.

Ranchi civic body hires 130 workers for puja

RANCHI: With less than a month to go for Durga Puja, Ranchiites are gearing up for the impending celebrations and the various puja committees are busy raising funds for erecting pandals.

However, despite preparations, cleanliness of the city still remains a major reason of concern.

Garbage is seen dumped at all thoroughfares, major roundabout and places. Ashok Kumar, member of a puja committee at Lower Chutia, said, "We will wait for another week for Ranchi Municipal Corporation to take some step and if they don't do anything we will have to hire labourers and clean the nearby areas as we can not expect people to walk on garbage and come pray to Ma Durga."

Ranchi Municipal Corporation had outsourced the responsibility of cleanliness of the city to A2Z Waste Management Company around two years ago but the company does not seem to be carrying out its task as desired. RMC had given three months' time to the company to improve its quality of work and one month is yet to go.

On Monday, the deputy mayor was out to survey places like HEC, Kusai Colony and Hinoo. He said, "We will be giving our best to clean the city before Durga Puja. We have already hired 130 labourers who have started working from Monday. They will clean the city before Durga Puja and will continue the drive till Chhath puja. After the festivals are over, we will think of an alternative."

A Ranchiite said, "Even the Main Road of the city is not clean. Garbage-loaded trucks have been parked near Roshpa Tower. Similar is the condition of area near the Main Road Gurudwara. At least RMC should arrange facilities during festive season." because thousands of people will be walking on the road to visit the pandals during Durga Puja."

Deputy mayor Sanjiv Vijayavargiya said, "The final decision will be taken in the board meeting of RMC. Anyways it is not wise to cancel the contract with A2Z during festive session the situation will worsen. Decision will be taken only after Chhath Puja."

Only a few have been exposed due to heavy rainfall in the last few days. We will fill them on Tuesday," said a civic body engineer on the condition of anonymity.

"Encroachments can be removed in a day. There aren't many potholes on the route, but they will also be filled," Shewale said.
