BBMP gives K R Market much-needed makeover

The City’s K R Market, which during the last 15 years presented a sordid place of abject neglect, on Sunday saw BBMP finally take to the broom to clean up the place.

The BBMP’s spring cleaning exercise caught the trading community in a pleasant surprise.

In a major mop up operation, which began around 8 am, tonnes and tonnes of wet waste were lifted in 12 trucks at the end of the massive three-hour drive. According to K R Market Flower Merchants’ Association members, nearly 15 tonne of wet waste is generated each day and the figure doubles up during the festive seasons. Over 800 students from Amrita Univerity and Amrita Vidyalayam lent a helping hand to the BBMP staff on the cleansing drive.

The exercise follows the spot visit by lokayutka officials headed by Justice Y Bhaskar Rao, who then directed the BBMP Commissioner M Lakshminaraya to address the garbage, leakage of drainage and other issues.

The commissioner, who, in turn was appraised of the rainwater clogging the entrace of the market during monsoon, directed Joint Commissioner (West) Lakshminarasimhaiah, to address the problem by taking up necessary steps. The association members also requested the palike officials to complete the biogas project soon.

Amidst the cleaning programme, association members held a protest demanding demolition of illegal shops built in the flower market. “There are 11 shops here which are unauthorised and built overnight. We will hold protests in the coming days, if the palike does not take any action with regard to this,” said Association President G M Divakar.

The width of link roads will be 30 metres. There should be 100 feet road on either side of the railway track passing through towns,” he explained.

Protecting monuments
