The GHMC Standing Committee members on Thursday expressed their dissatisfaction over road maintenance works in the city and non-implementation of various resolutions by the engineering staff. At a review meeting attended by Mayor Mohammed Majid Hussain and Commissioner M.T. Krishna Babu, the members took objection to the functioning style of engineers and said the resolutions of the committee and general body were not being implemented.

The Commissioner asked the Engineer-in-Chief to look into the matter and said that though specific instructions were given to the superintendent engineers for a regular review every month, the same was not being followed. There was need to issue memos to the engineers to inculcate discipline, he said.

Mr. Krishna Babu added that a stretch wise study of lapses would be taken up by appointing a consultant for laying permanent roads.

The Mayor on Thursday inspected the government schools at Hasham Compound and Idgah apart from the community hall at Bada Bazar. The Mayor sought the intervention of the Collector in addressing the objections raised by the Defence authorities at Hasham Compound School and at the Idgah School.

Shocked residents say they trusted the builder

The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike on Thursday issued notices to the developer of two buildings, adjacent to the one that collapsed in Someshwara Nagar, asking for details of construction.

Incidentally, the two adjacent structures have been developed by Mohammed Salim, the same builder who constructed the building that collapsed on Monday killing three workers. Salim has been absconding since then.

The BBMP move to issue notices was prompted by Upa Lokayukta S.B. Majage’s visit on Wednesday. The Upa Lokayukta issued a show-cause notice to the BBMP engineer responsible for clearing construction of the building. Reacting to this, the BBMP officials have slapped notices on Mohammed Salim and his partner Mudassir Pasha and directed them to produce the land documents and building plans within three days.

BMC mulls spot fine for malaria source in houses

BHOPAL: Next time you call up the Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) to complain about mosquitoes, just look around. If breeding source is inside residence or commercial compound, be ready to pay fine.

BMC commissioner Vishesh Garhpale said, "Stagnation of water will invite same fine for not maintaining clean premises. Spot fines to curb spread of malaria and dengue is a norm in cities like Delhi and Chennai."

Health authorities say using repellents and fogging operations are not enough. Many health officials have been critical of residents in Arera and other colonies for failing to clear stagnant water in unused tyres, uncovered tanks, wells, paper cups and pots.

To become law, the proposal would be introduced in the BMC council by next week, he added. Spot fine could range from Rs 50 to Rs 350 in Bhopal. Whereas spot fines in Delhi and Chennai range from Rs 1,000 up to Rs 5,000.

According to experts, most of mosquito breeding occurs in as little as 5mm of water - such as in plant pots or coconut shells.

In Bhopal this year, dengue has caused two deaths with 15 positive cases. 309 people have tested positive for malaria.
