Tuesday sealing-free, in parts

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi's (MCD) planned extensive sealing action against commercial establishments who have not yet deposited conversion charges was deferred in some parts of Delhi on Tuesday as traders lined up to submit their dues.

However, the civic agency said that the drive would start from Wednesday in other areas.

“The sealing drive was supposed to start from today but a number of traders wanted to pay their conversion charges. Our main aim is collect these charges and not to seal properties,” said a senior MCD official from the Central zone, which includes areas like Greater Kailash I, Lajpat Nagar, South Extension and Bhogal.

“Last week, the central zone received Rs. 4.38 crore. On Tuesday alone we collected Rs. 1.58 crore.”

The civic body has been undertaking sealing action against shops and commercial establishments in Delhi after owners failed to deposit the necessary conversion charges.

In areas like South Zone and Rohini Zone, however, the drive may begin from Wednesday.

“Today enough police personnel were not available. We will requisition security and sealing will start from tomorrow,” said an official, South zone, MCD.

Conversion charges are collected by MCD for changing the status of the road from residential to commercial as the case may be under the Master Plan 2021.
