MCC corporators to get Rs 25L for their wards

MYSORE: The corporators will get Rs 25 lakh to spend in their wards like legislators and MPs.

The Mysore City Corporation council on Thursday resolved to allot Rs 25 lakh each to 70 corporators to take up development works in their areas. This followed a demand by the corporators cutting across party lines. The House resolved to cut down to Rs 5 lakh to award tender for minor works. Earlier it was put at Rs 10 lakh.

Proposing the fund hike for development of wards, former mayor Sandesh Swamy from JD(S) said the residents are seeking answers from them. The officials have failed to collect taxes effectively and the elected representatives are facing tough questions, he stated seeking Rs 50 lakh per ward. The opposition leader Nandish Preetam pointed at the grants the civic body is getting from the state and the Union governments and asked for funds at their disposal to take up development works. Former mayor Ayub Khan from the Congress supported the duo. Mayor Pushpalatha Chikkanna agreed for Rs 15 lakh grants but it was pushed up further to Rs 25 lakh owing to pressure.
