Charting goals: Minister for Urban Affairs P.K. Kunhalikutty holds discussions with Mayor K.Chandrika, councillors, and officials at the Corporation office in Thiruvananthapuram on Wednesday .

Minister for Urban Affairs P.K. Kunhalikutty said here on Wednesday that the government was prepared to extend financial support for urban local self-government institutions.

Addressing councillors and senior officials during a visit to the City Corporation headquarters here, he said the funds needed for carrying out municipal functions would be released despite the financial difficulties faced by the government and the Corporation. The Minister stressed the need to recover the property tax dues from various institutions including the Assembly complex. The government, he said, would support this effort.

Capacity utilisation

Mr.Kunhalikutty stressed the need to find an amicable settlement to the problems faced by the garbage treatment plant at Vilappilsala. He called for capacity utilisation of the plant.

“Dumping garbage from the city in a suburban area is unfair. In working out a solution, the panchayat has to be taken into confidence.”

The Minister assured the Corporation employees that the government would adopt a sympathetic attitude to their problems.

Mayor K.Chandrika told the Minister that 70 per cent of the construction of the sewage treatment plant at Muttathara had been completed. She sought the help of the government in acquiring land for five sewage pumping stations.

Help promised

She also urged the Minister to ensure the availability of adequate staff to implement the Plan programmes taken up by the Corporation. The Minister assured the Mayor of all possible help for the Corporation.

Mr.Kunhalikutty was received by the Mayor, Deputy Mayor G.Happikumar, chairmen of standing committees, councillors, Corporation Secretary K.Biju, and senior officials. The Health section made a presentation on the garbage collection system in the city and the functioning of the treatment plant at Vilappilsala.

BBMP wants children to ‘return to the playground'

Staff Reporter

For those of you looking for encouragement in sports, there could be some news to cheer with the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) planning a separate allocation of Rs. 20 crore in the ensuing budget for which a sports policy is being drafted.

To be launched shortly, the “Marulibanni Aatada Maidanakke” (return to playground) seeks to promote basketball, hockey and football besides traditional games such as kabbadi, kho-kho and Aatya Patya. There are 154 playgrounds and eight indoor stadiums currently controlled by the BBMP.

“The programme aims at attracting children, who are now addicted to television and video games, to sports. It will also provide a ground for children now indulging in sports on roads,” Bangalore-in-charge Minister R. Ashok told presspersons here on Wednesday.

“Sports trainers will be paid a honorarium of Rs. 2,000 a month,” said and added that the palike would seek an area of 5 to 10 acres at five places along with peripheral ring road to be earmarked for sports grounds.

The BBMP will talk with private land holders for getting land for playgrounds, and the land would be acquired by giving transferable development rights (TDR). Mr. Ashok further said that swimming pools would be planned along the outer ring roads.

Though the Minister insisted that there could be no incentive for cricket, the BBMP release also has cricket in the list. According to the plan, trainers would be identified by nodal officers, who would be brought in to BBMP on deputation from the Sports Authority of India.

Mayor Sharadamma and Deputy Mayor S. Harish held a meeting with the SAI officials on Wednesday to chalk out the draft sports policy.

MCC corporators to get Rs 25L for their wards

MYSORE: The corporators will get Rs 25 lakh to spend in their wards like legislators and MPs.

The Mysore City Corporation council on Thursday resolved to allot Rs 25 lakh each to 70 corporators to take up development works in their areas. This followed a demand by the corporators cutting across party lines. The House resolved to cut down to Rs 5 lakh to award tender for minor works. Earlier it was put at Rs 10 lakh.

Proposing the fund hike for development of wards, former mayor Sandesh Swamy from JD(S) said the residents are seeking answers from them. The officials have failed to collect taxes effectively and the elected representatives are facing tough questions, he stated seeking Rs 50 lakh per ward. The opposition leader Nandish Preetam pointed at the grants the civic body is getting from the state and the Union governments and asked for funds at their disposal to take up development works. Former mayor Ayub Khan from the Congress supported the duo. Mayor Pushpalatha Chikkanna agreed for Rs 15 lakh grants but it was pushed up further to Rs 25 lakh owing to pressure.
