Municipal corporation officials told to check choking of drains

Staff Reporter

Vijayawada: Commissioner in-charge and chief engineer in-charge in Vijayawada Municipal Corporation Yohan on Monday asked officials to take up immediate steps for clearance of garbage slithering down the hill slopes to avoid choking of drains.

Mr. Yohan visited several areas in the city to monitor the drains in view of the rains and issued clear instructions to officials not to neglect the issue.

Expressing displeasure at the sight of silt accumulated near drains, he said the officials must have it removed with immediate effect. The areas he visited included BRT Road, Subbaramaiah Street, Drain Street, Panja Centre, Gandhi Bomma Centre, Winchipet, Nizampet Centre, Gandhi Hill area, Ganapathi Rao Road, K.T. Road, Vinnakotavari Chowk, Poolabaavi Street, Crambway Street, Housing Board Colony, Lalitha Nagar and RTC workshop road.

Pointing to heaps of garbage on roads, he asked the officials to have it shifted to the dump yard.

Happy with removal of silt at an outfall drain near Workshop Road, he headed to the Housing Board Colony. On being informed that the residents in the vicinity had to suffer despite completion of the trunk line works that were in progress until recently, he directed the engineering wing officials to do the needful to spare the locals of the inconvenience. Local corporator P. Nageswara Rao, Superintending Engineer-II Adiseshu, executive engineer Srinivas Rao and others were present.
