Waterlogging exposes poor civic sanitation

PNS | Dehradun

The failure of the Municipal Corporation of Dehradun to facilitate civic sanitation has continued to exacerbate the waterlogging problem in the city.

With the rainfall expected to break the record of the past 36 years, many roads and residential areas are facing the problem of waterlogging because the dumped garbage has blocked the existing storm water drainage outlets across the town.

Since the advent of the rainy season, the MCD has been struggling to cope up with the problem resulting from the lack of civic sanitation and waterlogging.

Dehradun Mayor Vinod Chamoli has so far presided over many rounds of meetings with the officials of the MCD’s Land and Health divisions and issued instructions aimed at facilitating the desired level of sanitation in the town.

Apart from this, even the district administration has issued directions to officials of the MCD and the Health Department to ensure that the required level of civic sanitation be maintained in the city. However, both the MCD and the district administration have been unable to ensure the desired level of civic sanitation in Dehradun.

Recently, two vehicle users sustained severe injuries when they lost their balance while trying to traverse a road flooded by storm water because the drainage outlets existing under the road were clogged by garbage dumped there in violation of civic sanitation regulations.

Soon after the advent of monsoon in Dehradun, residents of many areas had faced the problem of waterlogging caused by storm water and drains clogged by the carelessly dumped garbage.

The Mayor himself had toured the localities hit by waterlogging along with MCD officials, following which he had directed the officials to ensure clearance of the drainage system to prevent the problems caused by waterlogging in the areas. However, due to different factors negatively affecting both the MCD and the district administration, the required level of civic sanitation has not been achieved in the city. As a result of this, the problem caused by waterlogging has been exacerbated in many commercial and residential areas of the city.
