97 new dengue cases; count reaches 3,013

Staff Reporter | New Delhi

Dengue cases crossed the 3,000-mark in the national Capital on Monday. With just five days left for the Commonwealth Games, the Capital continued to struggle with the dengue outbreak as 97 more people tested positive for this vector-borne disease on Monday. With these fresh cases, the total dengue count in the Capital became 3,013. Delhi has also recorded five dengue deaths in this season.

South Delhi has continued to be worst-affected in 2010 recording 410 cases, followed by MCD Civil Lines Zone (392), Rohini (354) and Central Zone (337). The civic bodies are attributing the rapid increase in dengue cases this season to prolonged monsoon and stagnation of water at Commonwealth Games construction sites.

Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad had said, “Dengue count in the country is still low. The type of vector-borne disease is subtype 3, which is not very dangerous.” He had also said that countries like Sri Lanka and Indonesia have seen a very large number of dengue cases.
