Residents bemoan open drains, garbage

BANGALORE: The residents of Subramanyanagara ward have no major complaints against Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) as far as civic amenities are concerned.

However, they are unhappy with the open drains that needed to be strengthened immediately.

They said that many drains are filled with silt. They also complained against the heaps of garbage strewn all over the place. “The garbage cleaning is not satisfactory.

I hope the BBMP authorities take measures to keep this area free from garbage menace. I also want the BBMP employees to clear the silt and debris from open drains to avoid any inconvenience for the residents during monsoon,’’ said M S Veerappa, a resident of Milk Colony.

It is quite surprising to see a few electric poles on the a footpath near the BBMP office thus compelling the pedestrians to walk on the road risking their lives.

The garbage collection point at the BBMP office has become a nuisance for the residents. “We are suffering a lot due to the bad odour that emanates from the garbage. We are not able to have breakfast due to the stink,’’ said a housewife on condition of anonymity.

Many residents said that they are happy with the water supply. ‘’We have to thank our corporator for ensuring water supply every day. She has taken a keen interest to keep the area clean,’’ said Soorappa Babu, a resident.

Meanwhile, S Shashikala Kiran, corporator, said nine borewells were dug recently to mitigate water shortage problems.

“The yield of water is very good.

The BBMP plans to improve water supply with the cooperation of Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) authorities,’’ said Shashikala.

On the poor condition of drains, she said that the development of open drains has already commenced. “We will strengthen the open drains that needed immediate attention,’’ she said.

The corporator says efforts are being made to make Subramanyapura ward free from garbage menace. “I am planning to shift the garbage collection point to another location to avoid inconvenience to the residents,’’ she said.
