HYDERABAD: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has decided to permit the Secunderabad Cantonment Board (SCB) to dump garbage at Jawaharnagar in Kapra.
Following official interaction between both bodies in the last few days, it was decided that the SCB would be paying the fee raised for dumping garbage at Jawaharnagar, engage a worker and a bulldozer to level the site or share the maintenance cost of the yard based on the weight of the waste dumped daily.
Last week, the GHMC had halted municipal waste laden trucks of SCB from dumping it in the yard unhappy with the haphazard manner in which it was being unloaded inside.
The civic body relented only after frantic calls made by some public representatives about the piled up garbage in Cantonment.
Additional Commissioner (Health & Sanitation) S. Aleem Basha accepted that the municipal staff refused to allow SCB trucks inside the yard since repeated efforts to convince Cantonment officials to pay a fee and unload the municipal waste in a more orderly manner had failed.
15 trucks per day
Each day about 15 garbage trucks of SCB transfer garbage to the tune of 120 metric tonnes to Jawaharanagar where GHMC piles in close to 4,000 metric tonnes a day.
Rs. 25 lakh per month
“Maintaining the garbage dump is a huge task as we have our staff and machinery work night and day to settle the waste so as to allow fresh arrivals. We spend Rs. 25 lakh a month for this work alone,” explained Mr. Basha.
SCB trucks were allegedly unloading the garbage without driving ‘deep' into the yard forcing the municipal staff to take up the extra work. SCB was earlier forced to shift garbage dumping to Jawaharnagar following the A.P. Pollution Control Board (APCCB) directing it to stop putting the garbage at Hashmathpet few years ago.
GHMC too had been seeking fee for allowing usage of the dump and the amount reached Rs. 6 crore. Yet, with an amicable settlement done, senior officials were parrying on the precise amount to be paid which means the dues could be scaled down.
However, municipal officials were keen that the SCB also contributes towards payment of tipping fee to be paid to Ramky, the private firm which bagged the contract for the Integrated Municipal Solid Waste Management project at the site, but likely to be given dump site management to begin with.
