MC to make food street pocket-friendly

Chandigarh: After concluding that high prices at Night Food Street were keeping residents away, municipal corporation (MC) now plans to check these. Sources said the issue would soon be discussed with the kiosk owners in a meeting chaired by the MC commissioner.

The civic body also plans to prepare food items? rate chart after studying the adjoining markets. The step follows constant complaints about the street?s costly menu.

Mayor Anu Chatrath told The Times of India, ??The main aim of the Night Food Street was to cater to Panjab University students and attendants of PGI patients at affordable rates. But it seems steep rates have veered it from its path. We will soon hold a meeting to reduce the food prices.?

A senior MC officer said, ??We had reduced rates earlier too. If kiosk owners are still charging exorbitant prices, we will definitely initiate steps.??

The Night Food Street was launched with much fanfare in December 2008, but the quality of its food and its high prices soon made it unsavoury. Most of the MC officials and councillors held that it has failed to be a profit-earning venture.
