Outsourcing garbage clearance opposed

‘Allot piece-meal contracts to retired pourakarmikas'

‘We will handle them in a better manner'

Bangalore: Members of the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Kriya Samiti have opposed the palike's decision to outsource the maintenance of Sulabh Souchalayas and garbage clearance in the city.

Addressing presspersons here recently, samiti general secretary N. Narayan demanded that the palike instead allot piece-meal maintenance contracts to retired pourakarmikas or their children.

Pointing out that most pourakarmikas belonged to the backward communities, Mr. Narayan said the State Government should direct the palike to stop outsourcing cleaning contracts such as maintenance of storm-water drains, silt removal and garbage disposal.

“We can be allotted all these contracts. As we have been doing the same work, we would be able to handle these contracts in a better manner,” he said.

Although the State Government directed the BBMP in January to fill the 4,000 vacancies of pourakarmikas in the palike, nothing had been done so far.

“There are only 4,200 pourakarmikas on the rolls as of now. If the work is outsourced, the palike may not recruit more pourakarmikas, thereby depriving members of the backward communities a job opportunity,” he said.
